- Angeles Micol shows its conviction that the municipality of Murcia "has much to say and to contribute in this responsible and sustainable vision of the Huerta, agriculture, irrigation and the Segura River, so we consider it essential that the City Council , firmly, to these claims "
NOW MURCIA demands that the City Council support the claims arising from traditional irrigation, which have taken shape in recent weeks with the creation of the Irrigators Platform and Citizens of the Segura Basin 'Segura transparente'.
The Platform integrates farmers from the original irrigations of Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, Murcia and Valencia, defending the balance of the agro-environment and responsibility and sustainability in the exercise of agriculture and the use of resources.
Now Murcia has registered for the next Plenary the motion made by the Platform for the City Council to support measures aimed at achieving the objectives of the Platform.
The text also establishes that a copy of the agreements approved by the municipal plenary session be transferred to the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, to the General Directorate of Irrigation of the Autonomous Community and to the General Sub-Directorate of Irrigation of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment.
The councilor Angeles Micol explains that the Platform was presented publicly last December, integrating farmers who have used their historical irrigation rights in a responsible and sustainable way, compared to the investment groups of the industrial agribusiness that have been implanted by these territories , and that despite proclaiming themselves 'defenders of the Huerta levantiva', they have been jointly responsible for the expansion of important irrigation areas of doubtful legality.
As Safe Transparent states, these investors "have transformed areas of rainfed and even forest, contributing to aggravate, unsustainably, the structural water deficit of the Segura Basin, depleting aquifers, destroying the landscape, contaminating lagoons and even seas as our Mar Menor, depredating orchard and natural resources and fatally influencing the ecosystem and the way of life that has been given to us since time immemorial ".
Faced with these "predators", the farmers represented by the Platform "through the use of traditional and current techniques have managed the renewable water resources associated with the Segura, tributaries, aquifers and springs, offering economy and quality of life to towns and cities and feeding a productive fabric of small and medium-sized farms that represent a true social irrigation and that have conformed a landscape of which the ribereños feel proud ".
Micol: "The municipality of Murcia has a lot to say"
To combat the unsustainability of the Levantine agribusiness, Segura Transparente defends the balance of the agro-environment, focusing its struggle on aspects such as full transparency in the management of all water resources in the basin, both superficial and underground;
conservation, maintenance and active support to traditional and historical irrigation;
or the conservation of the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Segura River, tributaries and springs, eradicating its pollution of agrarian, urban and industrial origin.
Micol shows its conviction that the municipality of Murcia "has much to say and to contribute in this responsible and sustainable vision of the Huerta, agriculture, irrigation and the Segura River, for which we consider it essential that the City Council join, with firmness, to the claims of Transparent Security and traditional irrigation ".
