The Municipal Socialist Group describes as "intolerable and unforgivable" that around 28% of the population of Murcia is cold in their homes, according to the Municipal Plan against the Energy and Water Poverty of the City Hall which shows that more than 29,000 families They can not keep their home at an adequate temperature.
"Talking about this outstanding figure is to say that almost 30% of Murcia are in a situation of energy poverty, a percentage too high but nothing strange if we take into account that Murcia has the lowest wages and pensioners the smallest income of Europe, although the price of electricity is equally high for the entire national territory, "says the socialist spokeswoman, Susana Hernández.
Therefore, he claims that part of the contingency fund is reserved to ensure that no neighbor of the municipality of Murcia passes cold in their homes, as this fund, endowed in the 2017 budget with almost two million euros and reserved for emergency situations, it should serve to face "this tremendous urgency of families with children who do not live in decent conditions and not so much to pay extra hours or to face judicial sentences".
"It is important to prioritize the urgent, especially when it comes to problems that can be predicted, such as in winter it is cold, so we must be prepared," he adds.
In addition, Hernandez insists that in the last exercise "doubled the spending for the celebration of parties (more than 4 million euros in total), which, remember, are held on three streets of the city, plus another million in publicity for the Mayor Ballesta's own pomp, and two others at conferences and meetings, amounts that could be adjusted and reduced while we have in our municipality all this population in a situation of energy poverty ".
In this sense, the spokeswoman announces a motion to be defended at the next municipal plenary session, in which it will demand a greater economic endowment for social emergency in the 2018 budgets, the revision of the thresholds to grant aid and the regulation of the use of the contingency fund municipal.
It must be remembered that the concept of energy poverty is the situation in which it is necessary to allocate more than 10% of the income of a household to the energy bill and that the same Municipal Plan against Energy and Water Poverty of the City of Murcia highlights that can affect the school performance of children and even health problems.
