Terra Natura Murcia is celebrating.
The Councilor for Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén, and the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, visited this morning the first brown bears born in the city who turn 20.
Yaqui and Nuca are the descendants of the first animals of this species that arrived in the city on March 27, 1997. It was the City of Murcia who managed their transfer to avoid being slaughtered in Sobrón (Álava).
Since then, they were part of the municipal zoo and were, subsequently, the first tenants of Terra Natura coinciding with its opening.
A year later, from that couple were born two young, a male and a female, who are now celebrating their twentieth anniversary.
His birth generated great expectations at the time and their names, Yaqui and Nuca, were chosen by the neighbors themselves through the media.
In addition, there were many Murcia who visited them to meet them in the first person.
Currently, eight brown bear bears live in Terra Natura, all belonging to the same family branch and which are part of the animal care program of the European Association of Zoos (EAZA).
They live in an installation of more than 2,000 square meters with abundant vegetation, a water pond with waterfall and caves.
Educational talks are held every day in Terra Natura to explain its history, as well as its characteristics and way of life.
Sometimes there are also different environmental enrichment activities that favor their development.
The brown bear is a plantigrade that is currently in danger of extinction.
Their fur and the layer of fat that they have just below provides them with a great capacity to isolate themselves from extreme temperatures, both cold and heat.
