New conference on 'Aging and degenerative diseases' (10/01/2018)

This Wednesday at 19:30 hours the professor of Human Anatomy and director of the Institute for Research in Aging of the UMU, María Trinidad Herrero Ezquerro, will give a new conference on 'Aging and degenerative diseases' at the Las Claras Cultural Center, belonging to the Cajamurcia Foundation.

Herrero Ezquerro, principal investigator of the Clinical and Experimental Neuroscience group of the UMU and member of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Murcia, will explain what happens during aging and what are some of the most important neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, or Multiple Sclerosis;

all produced by the progressive death of neurons in different regions of the nervous system.

The prevalence of these conditions, which impair both movement and cognitive decline, is increasing worldwide.

In fact, only in the Region of Murcia it is estimated that 17,000 people, that is, more than 80% of the population over 65, suffer from some type of dementia.

Therefore, "the increase in aging in the population is an imminent reality that causes new situations that we must learn to face", they explain from the organization.

That is why we must attach importance to this issue present in society.

The conference is organized by the Murcian Association of Neuroscience (AMUNE), born a year ago in order to increase and disseminate the knowledge we have about these fields in the Region of Murcia.

"AMUNE is born from an idea, from a shared passion for Neuroscience." The common denominator of its members is the impetus to spread about that great tree that is neuroscience, "explains Sonia Gayoso, vice president of the Association.

The activity has the collaboration of the Cajamurcia Foundation.

As explained in the Association in his triptych, getting older does not necessarily mean getting sick, but understanding the symptoms, antecedents, causes, treatments or therapies will give us better tools to extend the quality of life in aging, and that is what they want to achieve with activities like these
