The Department of Youth and Development Cooperation, directed by Rebeca Pérez, collaborates with the Psychosocial Intervention Diagram Foundation in the promotion of the Project Support to the development and management of intervention in the field of health in Sandiara and Thiadiaye, Senegal with an amount granted of € 1,429.
Fundación Diagrama Psicosocial Intervention is a national and international foundation that has been working since 1991 in the care of the needs of vulnerable people or in social difficulties.
The Foundation holds the Special Consultative Status before the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), and is a member of the NGO Conference (CoNGO), entity with General Consultative Status before the ECOSOC.
This solidarity program has been carried out in coordination with the local counterpart "Association Diante Bou Bess" and with the collaboration of the Solidarity Surgery Association of Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.
The project focuses on Senegal, a country where health problems manifest themselves, such as communicable diseases, such as malaria or cholera, widespread malnutrition and the lack of hygienic measures to treat some products. food.
Life expectancy is around 50 years and the infant mortality rate is around 56 per thousand inhabitants.
A situation that places the specific objective of the project in addressing the demands of the population with health problems in the towns of Sandiara, Thiadiaye and surroundings.
Through the improvement of infrastructures and the implementation of a medical campaign in rural areas of Senegal, 1,285 people have been treated in consultation, 369 surgical operations have been carried out, 190 sonographic studies have been carried out and 519 health check-ups have been carried out. otorhinolaryngology aimed at children from schools in the area.
For the achievement of the objectives and of the people served that have been mentioned before, the following activities were carried out:
1st Improves the infrastructure in medical machinery of Thiadiaye hospital
From the beginning of the project, the suppliers with whom the different purchase options had been obtained were contacted.
Finally, an electronic scalpel was purchased which, once purchased, was transported to Senegal and started up in the Thiadiaye Hospital once the medical campaign begins.
2nd Training is given to professionals in the field of health of Thiadiaye hospital
The volunteer doctors who are part of the campaign prepared a training prior to the trip to Senegal.
Once the campaign began, a group of 11 professionals from the Thiadiaye hospital were trained so that, when the initiative was finished, the health personnel in the area could handle the scalpel autonomously.
3rd A phase of medical consultations for the population of Sandiara, Thiadiaye and surroundings is launched
Prior to the medical campaign, the medical team organized the work that will be carried out in the field, performing a screening, with the previous information of patients, and preparing the necessary material.
The medical campaign was carried out from December 2 to 17, 2016 and 1,285 patients were seen in a medical consultation.
In addition, 190 sonographic studies were carried out to detect possible pathologies, some of which ended in the phase of surgical interventions.
4th Surgical interventions are carried out for patients from Sandiara, Thiadiaye and surroundings that require it
During the medical campaign, from December 2 to 17, a total of 369 surgeries were performed on 341 patients, since some of them with multipathology required more than one intervention.
The level of success has been high;
it has been possible to improve the quality of life and save many lives thanks to the campaign.
5th Pediatric otorhinolaryngology examinations are carried out in the child population of Sandiara, Thiadiaye and surroundings
Prior to the campaign, the counterpart contacted the schools in the area to prepare, with the instructions of the medical team, the pediatric intervention in otorhinolaryngology.
Many children, due to obstructions of the auditory canals, suffer from reduced hearing, and this is followed by academic and social problems.
With the intervention that was carried out in this regard, 519 minors from the area were reviewed.
