Change Murcia proposes that the City Council reduce the use of substances that affect the endocrine system (18/12/2017)

The councilor of Cambiemos Murcia, Margarita Guerrero, will present in the plenary on Thursday an initiative for the City of Murcia to adopt measures to reduce the exposure of the population to endocrine disruptors, a series of substances that could be related to metabolic, neurological problems and immunological, among others.

In this sense, within the framework of the campaign "My city takes care of my hormones", promoted by the Alborada Foundation (entity that manages the Chair of Pathology and Environment of the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid), the municipal training It will propose, for example, that the use of pesticides, such as glyphosate, be progressively withdrawn, that the use of organic foods be encouraged in day-care centers and school canteens and that dissemination campaigns on sources of exposure be launched.

Substances such as Bisphenol A, used in plastics, packaging and thermal paper;

the preservatives and parabens of cosmetics, perfumes and cleaning products, and the phthalates and softeners of plastics and footwear are in the spotlight of the scientific community for its possible effects on the endocrine system.

In this regard, the mayor has said that "as a precautionary principle, public administrations have the obligation to put all the means to avoid any impact on the health of neighbors."

Other measures to adopt, according to Murcia Change, would be to include in the clauses of public contracts the limitation of the use of chemical substances capable of acting as endocrine disruptors.

In the long list of diseases whose increase is possibly related to some extent with these substances, and which is estimated to make the European Union's health bill expensive at 150,000 million euros, we must add the problems related to fertility and reproductive health and breast and testicular cancer.
