To this end, it has set in motion the drafting of a Plan of Action for Climate and Sustainable Energy 2018-2030 that will gather the contributions of the associations and entities that work in the field of sustainability.
The plan currently in force made it possible to reduce 24.5% of emissions in 2015, which is 20% higher than the commitments assumed to be achieved before 2020
The City of Murcia has proposed to achieve the European Union's goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030, through an Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy.
Murcia recently joined the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the main European movement aimed at local authorities in the fight against climate change, which represents an initiative that combines the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, mitigation and adaptation measures.
The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the municipality will be achieved through the use of renewable energies, the substitution of fossil fuels for cleaner ones, the decarbonisation of the fleet, the improvements in energy efficiency and the awareness policies that allow you to make good use of energy.
The elaboration of this plan meets the requirements of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, to which the City Council has also wished to include a participatory process, which gathers the contributions of the different groups working in the field of sustainability .
This methodology has already been applied successfully in the preparation of the Adaptation to Climate Change Plan in the Municipality of Murcia
Previous success
The writing of the new plan starts with the impulse that supposes the attainment of the objectives of reduction of CO2 emissions to 2020, where already in the year 2015 it was reached the 24.5% of reduction of the same in the municipality of Murcia, figure superior to 20% committed to 2020, the City of Murcia.
Now work begins to implement this new plan of measures for the period 2018-2030.
The councilor for Urbanism, Environment and Garden, Antonio Navarro Corchón, says that 'it is time to implement a new medium-long term sustainable energy plan that will help us accelerate the decarbonisation of our territory, allowing access to sources of safe, sustainable and affordable energy to citizens'.
This action protocol is complemented by the Adaptation to Climate Change Plan of the Municipality of Murcia, already in its final phase, which 'works to strengthen our capacity to adapt to climate change and thus contribute to the fulfillment of the climate and energy objectives of the EU by 2030 ', says Navarro.
The session held by the Governing Board this week has approved the award of the development of this new document to the business association CETENMA, Technological Center for Energy and Environment of the Region of Murcia, with a term of 12 months.
