The City Council implements different water saving measures in the gardens (13/12/2017)

The Department of Modernization of the Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, directed by José Guillén, has launched a series of measures aimed at saving water in the gardens.

Councilman Jose Guillen explained that "the gardens of Murcia are raised from low consumption almost entirely, looking for low-consumption species and irrigation systems already in the design phase of them, but we continue to innovate to reduce the consumption of water in these green areas. "

Thus, the main gardens of the city are connected to a weather station, which adjusts the necessary irrigation depending on weather conditions, increasing or decreasing depending on the temperatures or wind, adjusting the irrigation to potential evapotranspiration.

In addition, this station has an anemometer in such a way that it cuts irrigation in case of strong winds, which could cause water drift and therefore waste.

Currently there are some 60 programmers linked to the weather station.

There are also 60 programmers controlled by GPRS and 86 by municipal WIFI network, which adjust to the minute from any computer with web access and which allow to cut or adjust these programmers in a matter of seconds.

The rest of the programmers of the city have adjusted to winter times by reducing water consumption by 40% compared to the same period last year.

As for the irrigation devices, low-flow diffusion nozzles are being installed in all the gardens, so that they distribute more evenly the irrigation and in more time avoiding losses by runoff and allowing the soil to absorb the water for the irrigation. plant.

In addition, the installation of underground drip irrigation is being increased to avoid evaporation, gradually burying the hoses seen in the city.

Another measure is the use of self-compensating dripper to ensure a homogeneous distribution of water, and a slow contribution of water of 2 liters per hour so that the soil absorbs water without runoff as in the case of diffusion.

Likewise, anti-discharge valves are being installed in irrigation emitters to prevent the pipes from being discharged, so that when the irrigation is cut off, the water is automatically blocked inside the pipeline, ready for use the next day and is not lost by "gravity".

In the gardens the diffusers are being changed by sprinklers, since these provide a slower distribution of water and prevent runoff and electrovalves are installed on the head, to ensure the closure of the installation and prevent water leaks, a double closure in network.

The Parks and Gardens Service are also placing pressure reducers to reduce the risk of breakdown and water leaks and programmers and using anti-vandalism drippers to prevent their uncontrolled removal and prevent water leaks.

Filters are also installed to prevent the entry of unwanted waste into the irrigation network that produces a non-closing of the electrovalves and therefore loss of water and changing the taps of drinking fountains by low flow to save water.

99% of the irrigation is done at night to avoid losses due to evaporation

In addition this year a second crusher has been incorporated so that a percentage of the pruning (30%) is being crushed and it is reincorporating in the form of mulch to the gardens, thus avoiding the direct exposure of the soils to evaporation and therefore saving water supply.
