The University of Murcia (UMU) will contribute to the development and progress of the women of Burkina Faso and, with this, to the improvement of living conditions in this country, which will be carried out through the protocol of action that has been signed today, November 29, in the Convalecencia building, headquarters of the Rector's Office.
The agreement, which has been signed by the rector, José Orihuela, and the representative in Murcia of the Burkina Women Association, María Teresa Garrigós, contemplates the joint execution of studies and research projects in the areas that are considered of common interest, the cooperation in the development of outreach and social awareness programs in relation to childhood, employment and the situation of women and human rights, and the provision of training courses.
The UMU student internships are also planned for programs and centers supported by the Asociación Mujer Burkina.
The director of the Unit for Equality between Women and Men of the UMU, Professor Eva Rubio, has indicated that these activities are aimed at enabling women in Burkina Faso to become engines of social change that their country needs.
For its part, María Teresa Garrigós has indicated that the aforementioned country is one of the poorest in the world, with a GDP per capita that barely reaches 250 euros and a population that lives on a subsistence agricultural economy.
And he added that all the social changes in the world will be achieved when men and women walk on an equal footing.
Orihuela, who has closed the event, has stressed that the UMU has for years with a Unit for Equality and a Vice-Chancellor who has assumed this competence and led by Professor María del Carmen López Aniorte.
He also indicated that the Governing Council, at its meeting last Friday, approved the creation of the technical scale of equality, as another of the commitments of the institution with these issues.
