The City of Murcia, through the Department of Social Rights, has activated the special cold device for homeless people in anticipation of low temperatures, less than 5 degrees, during the coming days.

The protocol was activated this year later than usual because the thermometers had not registered low temperatures during the night for a long time.

In this way, the Mobile Emergency Service and Social Care dependent on Social Services will provide a service of accompaniment and delivery of hot drinks, food, sleeping bags or blankets by professionals responsible for caring for homeless people who are in extreme situations, trying to promote their social integration.

A work that is added to the one carried out throughout the year by the SEMAS professionals, made up of social workers from the Town Hall and local police officers.

According to the Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, SEMAS intervention is essential so that people who are on the street can be served at the reception centers that work directly with the City Council, moving it so that you can spend the night in a safe place and sheltered from the cold. "

"We reinforced a service that is activated whenever the thermometer falls below 5 degrees, with an integral device and at all levels: detection, social care, prevention and safety, aimed at ensuring those people who are in a more vulnerable situation, and guarantee their well-being in the face of falling temperatures ", he concluded.

Local Police: permanent surveillance

In addition to the work of SEMAS, the Local Police carries out a permanent surveillance work on public roads.

Agents who patrol the streets at night also have blankets and help detect people who may need assistance from Social Services, working in a coordinated manner.

In this sense, the City Council calls for neighbors to alert the Local Police if they detect people sleeping on the street, so they can be referred to one of the services that make up the special device.
