Murcia change has demanded today that the City Council publicly reprimand the statements of the Government delegate, Francisco Bernabé, which refers to the arrival of immigrants to the shores of Murcia as "a coordinated attack" and "an assault", and has requested to urge the regional government to take measures that prioritize respect for human rights.
Margarita Guerrero, the councilor who signs the initiative, recalled that in the last thousands of people have died trying to reach the European coasts, so the words of Bernabé are "irresponsible" and have a "racist bias" to accuse who flee from contexts of extreme poverty or repression, as is the case of people from the Rif.
For Guerrero, "it is not acceptable" for a public servant to make these kinds of statements, especially in a context such as the current one, marked by "hate speech" and the rise of the extreme right.
Regarding current policies, the mayor has stressed that "the humanitarian crisis we are living will not be solved by putting bigger concertinas or higher walls", but through a reformulation of migration policy focused on the causes of migratory movements and based on respect for rights.
The situation of the people who arrive to the Spanish coasts is "exasperating".
"To those who risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean, a CIE awaits them on land, and if it overflows, as has happened recently in the Region, they are sent to jail even if it does not meet the minimum conditions."
The result is that "people who have not committed any crime are deprived of liberty," said Guerrero, who has also demanded that the City Council ask the central government to bet on the community level for a real change in migration policies. leaving aside the policy of border control and based on respect for people.
