The Catholic University of Murcia has hosted the VIII Technical Conference of the COE - VII Congress of Olympism UCAM with the participation of the elite of Spanish sport in the Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, which has had the presence of more than 700 attendees throughout the day
The event has gathered 24 elite athletes who have 19 Olympic medals, of which eight are gold.
Distributed in three round tables, the congress has begun with: Javier Hernanz (canoeing), Duane da Rocha (swimming), Miguel Ángel López (athletic march) and Borja Vivas (weight) who have commented on the most hidden part of the sport, what the fans do not see in the Olympic Games.
The inaugural colloquium, moderated by Pedro Pablo San Martín, vice president of the Spanish Sports Press Association (AEPD), was opened with a recommendation from Duane for future athletes: "The important thing is to avoid any emotion before competing. , be in quarantine before a Games. "
The most commented anecdote of the first table has been that of Javier Hernanz about the swimming team that could not be at the opening of the Games as they participated in the first day of competition and missed the time to leave the Olympic Stadium with the Spanish delegation: "In the hotel of the Olympic Village mounted their own show with flags", has stood out among the laughter that the rest of attendees.
Miguel Ángel López highlighted the detail that humanizes the tension of the high competition: "Mireia Belmonte had a very nice gesture to be interested when I was injured." After training, she approached and became interested in my condition.
The second table, moderated by Julián Redondo, editor-in-chief of Deportes de 'La Razón' and president of the Spanish Association of the Sports Press, counted on: Cristian Toro, Marcus Cooper and Saúl Craviotto (canoeing).
With all the commotion caused by the fear of the bite of the mosquito carrying the Zika virus in Rio 2016, Craviotto said that "it affected me and my wife and I decided that it was better that she did not travel to Brazil, we did not want to take risks".
Cristian Toro, however, has played down the issue by saying that "it was something we could not control, I do not remember much about it, so I infer that I did not give it importance."
To close the tables of the Congress, the last intervention was led by Eva Calvo (taekwondo), Ruth Beitia (high jump), Maialen Chourraut (canoeing slalom) and Jennifer Pareja (water polo).
Beitia stressed that "taking pressure off is what leads you to success, the high jump is a test of control, we have worked with personal tools in each jump".
For his part, Maialen Chourraut recalled that "Beijing was disastrous for me, a mistake and goodbye to the Games, goodbye to four years of preparation," although that served to motivate him to achieve the bronze in London and then the gold of Rio.
José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, Alejandro Blanco, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, and Kevin Farrell, prefect of the Discastry for the Laity, Family and Life, have closed the congress.
Mendoza thanked the athletes "the great example you are giving young people when it comes to strive to continue training and competing without leaving school."
Alejandro Blanco has put in value the work that is carried out from the Catholic University of Murcia: "If the UCAM did not exist, the Spanish sport would be different because the work that this university does is special."
On the other hand, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, has closed the congress remembering that sport is "sacrifice and discipline for life" and the athletes of the UCAM are a great example of it.
