III International Congress of Brotherhoods and Fraternities (09/11/2017)

Jose Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, took part in the opening ceremony;

The vice president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Guzmán Carriquiry, has given the opening conference.

The Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos has welcomed this morning the opening ceremony of the III International Congress of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods, organized by the Catholic University of Murcia and the Real and Most Illustrious Cabildo Superior de Cofradías de Murcia.

The vice president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Guzmán Carriquiry, has given the inaugural lecture, in which he has lectured on popular religiosity, this also through Pope Francis.

José Manuel Lorca Planes, Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, and Javier Celdrán, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment of the CARM.

Mendoza recalled that the Catholic University of Murcia was designated years ago by the Vatican as the permanent headquarters for the celebration of the world congresses of brotherhoods and fraternities;

besides for the organization of the World Games of Catholic Universities.

He also highlighted the importance of this act for the institution he represents as a Catholic university: "We have a fundamental objective, to collaborate with the Church in its evangelizing mission." The UCAM not only offers quality education and research excellence but also facilitate the encounter with Jesus Christ of our young people, always respecting their freedom ".

The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, thanked the UCAM and the Cabildo for organizing this event that places the city of Murcia and the Region as the international epicenter of Holy Week.

During his speech he recalled that Murcia is the only province in Spain with three Holy Weeks of international character, and other very important also of national tourist interest.

"The Region of Murcia is a world power in Holy Week, our cultural and religious heritage is also unique in the country and internationally, and we also have to promote it so that they come to know it", he assured.

For his part, Ramón Sánchez-Parra has defined Murcia as the world capital of Holy Week, "to see that throughout the Region of Murcia there is a spectacular Holy Week, with some impressive images," he said, and thanked the participation of the music bands that will accompany the 16 steps that will parade on Saturday through the streets of Murcia, on the occasion of the extraordinary Magna Procession 'Saved by the Cross of Christ'.

For this event the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena also had words: "In it practically all the sensitivities of Holy Week in the Region will be represented, because they will be steps not only from the capital, but also from Cartagena, Caravaca, Yecla, Lorquí, Jumilla, Cieza, Santomera ".

Inaugural Conference

The Vice President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Guzmán Carriquiry, has given the inaugural lecture in which he has lectured on popular religiosity, and how Pope Francis lives it.

The speaker began by thanking the people of Andalusia "because she is the nurturing mother of the first American evangelization, which she sowed through the Andalusian people that crossed the ocean".

On how Latin America currently lives Holy Week, he affirmed that there are many cities that maintain the original traditions of the first American evangelization "in which Holy Week is lived in a similar way to those of Spanish cities, and especially to the Andalusian ", and added" brotherhoods and brotherhoods are protagonists of this popular religiosity. "

He also stressed that "popular religiosity is a legitimate way of living the faith."

Referring to the Holy Father, he assured us that we only have to observe his gestures "that say more than his words", and he recalled that "when he writes his fundamental programmatic document Evangelii Gaudium, he dedicates a very important chapter to popular religiosity".
