NOW MURCIA denounces that the mayor Ballesta has turned "the square of Santo Domingo into an authentic mousetrap full of facilities that hinder traffic and annoy pedestrians, who prevent the use of banks and that can create situations of real danger".
The municipal training explains that the trade fair installed these days in the square "adds to the presence of terraces, kiosks, telephone booths and now also fenced the ficus", making the area "in an uncomfortable and dangerous gymkhana" .
Alicia Morales highlights the great contradiction that Ballesta has decided to reduce the number of terraces in the Plaza de Santo Domingo "with the intention of winning a walk zone" but instead promote a much worse situation for several weeks "with an excessive invasion of booths ".
Last May Councilman José Guillén said that the goal in Santo Domingo is "to reconcile the different terraces and businesses with the transit of pedestrians, carts and ambulances, taking maximum care of aesthetics and urban quality."
"It is questionable if these objectives cease to exist when it comes to installing trade fairs in the square," stresses the councilor.
Morales affirms that "these commercial fairs are a good initiative, but it is necessary to plan them appropriately in the urban space, so that they do not affect the public roads and the pedestrian so drastically".
In this sense, the mayor says that "it does not make sense that the PP requires the hoteliers to reduce their occupation of public spaces while the City Council makes an even greater occupation."
The spokeswoman of Ahora Murcia points out the fact that "the use of Santo Domingo Square has been denied on numerous occasions to NGOs and associations, when they have asked to use a stand for just a few hours, but then we find the highly invasive presence of trade fairs for weeks, really what is the criterion of the PP and Mr. Guillén in the use and transfer of public spaces?
Morales emphasizes that "the municipal PP has to bet on making the pedestrian the protagonist of the city, to make Murcia a sustainable and livable city, with a much more relevant role for pedestrians and bicycles."
