The Plenum of the City of Murcia unanimously approved the start of the procedures for the inclusion of Murcia in the Municipal Network of Cities and Communities friendly to the elderly.
A decision that has been endorsed today by the Committee on Employment, Social Rights, Education and Culture and will be presented next Thursday 26 to the Plenary, who will be in charge of sending the application to the Institute of Older and Social Services (IMSERSO), who will endorse adherence to the project.
This is a decisive step towards the commitment of this City Council to respect for diversity, equality between groups, participation and appreciation of older people in all areas of their lives, respect for their rights and the creation of a friendly environment with this group of population establishing an agenda of actions in which the majors become protagonists of the change ", explained Conchita Ruiz.
As outlined in the WHO guidebook on "global cities that are friendly to the elderly," the aging and urbanization of the population are two global trends that together constitute important forces that characterize the twenty-first century.
As cities grow, their share of 60-year-old residents and more is increasing.
Older people are a resource for their families, communities and economies in supportive and supportive living environments.
This is why WHO considers that active aging is a lifelong process that is affected by several factors that, by themselves and together, promote health, participation and safety in the lives of adults greater.
An age-friendly city encourages active aging by optimizing opportunities for health, participation and safety in order to better the quality of life for people as they age.
The Network of support and advice created by WHO and integrated by all cities and towns attached to the project, which aims to:
- Establish relations between participating cities and between them and the World Health Organization.
- Facilitate the exchange of information and good practices, which improves interventions in the municipalities.
- Provide technical support and training.
- Recognize the diversity of older people.
- Promotes a culture of inclusion shared by people of all ages
- Respect your choices and lifestyle choices.
- Anticipates and responds flexibly to your needs and preferences related to active aging.
The project is structured in the development of four phases distributed over five years.
In the first one, during the years 1 and 2, mechanisms will be created to achieve the participation of the elderly in the network cycle through the focus groups, an initial diagnosis of "friendliness" and adaptation of the locality to the elderly, of a three-year Plan of action for the whole city, as well as the identification of indicators for the monitoring and evaluation of the progress.
The following three years will serve to implement and follow up the Action Plan through the evaluation of progress and continuous improvement.
Lastly, it should be remembered that the municipal resources available to elderly people were included in a Guide developed in 2012 on the occasion of the European Year of Active Aging and Intergenerational Solidarity, in which the Town Council of Murcia actively collaborated, which provided a framework and opportunity to share experiences of good practices as well as to promote actions for the benefit of older people, promoting their collaboration and active participation and involvement of various councils.
