Ecologists in action demand CHS to end discharges in the Segura River (19/10/2017)

Ecologistas en Acción has once again filed a complaint with the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura for the appearance of artificial foams, the smell of detergent waters, and the presence of hundreds of dying fish, even dead ones, in the urban stretch of the Segura river at its passing through Murcia, with special visibility on the footbridge of Manterola.

The organization has recalled that it has been denouncing these episodes for years, always associated with rainy days, and that it was not until September 2015 when the CHS publicly acknowledged that it had opened several files to a Las Torres de Cotillas company (which it did not want identify publicly) by repeated spills that caused the foam and dead fish, and even warned that shuffling bring the case to the Environmental Attorney.

Therefore, Ecologistas en Acción requires the CHS to publicly identify the company responsible and impose an exemplary sanction that dissuades it from new spills in the future, since it is clear that this is not a casualty accident but rather is an undesirable business practice that uses the days with heavy rainfall forecasts to carry out illegal spills, which end up polluting the river.

In the same direction they request the implication of the City Council of Las Torres de Cotillas to cut these illegal spills of said company to the municipal network and / or irrigation ditches, and ask the Prosecutor's Office to be interested in the case, since it is not a receipt that in the XXI century the Segura river will continue to suffer these contaminant spills repeatedly whenever it rains, and more when it is known the recidivism of the company responsible, negatively affecting the entire ecosystem, since although the most striking effects are the visible foam and dozens of fish on the surface looking for oxygen, the truth is that this type of spillage negatively affects many other species present in the river ecosystem, degrading it.
