The city of Murcia is one step closer to being part of the World Network of Cities and Communities that are friendly to the elderly.
Murcia City Council today approved the request for membership of this project, promoted by the World Health Organization, which aims to create environments and services that promote active and healthy aging.
The WHO, aware of the progressive aging of the world population,
directs this project to all municipalities interested in promoting the
active aging.
This project tackles in an integral way the aspects that affect the day to day of our towns and cities and does this by promoting the participation of the elderly, taking into account their needs, perceptions, and opinions throughout the entire process of analysis and improvement of the municipality;
using the methodology proposed by WHO to carry it out.
It is for that reason that "the participation of the elderly people is essential element of the methodology proposed by the WHO in this line, the City council of Murcia will create in the next months the Municipal Council of Elderly people like formal organ of participation, that will depend of the Municipal Council of Social Services. It is a council that does not exist at present and that will be put in place to advance in the strategy of participation and promotion of the collective of elderly people in our municipality ", explained Councilor Conchita Ruiz.
The process to participate has already begun with the application for membership of the World Network of Friendly Cities and Communities with the Elderly, after which the project is based on four phases and with a duration of five years:
Phase 1. Years one and two consists of 4 steps:
1st creation of mechanisms to achieve the participation of the elderly in the cycle of the network through the focus groups.
2ª Initial Diagnosis of the "Amigabilidad" and the adaptation of the locality to the elderly.
Document adapted to the context of the Vancouver Protocol.
3º Elaboration of a three-year Action Plan for the whole city, based on the initial diagnosis and proposals of the elderly.
4 Identification of indicators for the monitoring and evaluation of progress during the development and implementation of the Action Plan.
Phase 2. Implementation and follow-up of the Action Plan (years 3-5).
Phase 3. Assessment of progress (End of year 5).
Phase 4. Continuous improvement.
(Start of the 5-year cycle process).
Finally, the methodology identifies 8 areas of the urban and social environment that influence the health and quality of life of people, such as Outdoor Spaces and Buildings, Transportation, Housing, Respect and Social Inclusion, Participation social, communication and information, Work and citizen participation and Social and Health Services.
