The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, has presided over the first working meeting of the San Esteban Committee of Experts, who have supported the technical and scientific process of the Master Plan being developed for the recovery of the site and the whole environment, returning this public space of 23,000 m2 to the neighbors and enabling a tourist and cultural resource of first level in the municipality of Murcia.

The Committee is made up of six professors and professors from archeology, medieval history and heritage management, and its fundamental mission is "to provide the project as a whole with maximum excellence and technical rigor," said José Ballesta.

The progress of the Master Plan has been accepted by the experts, who have also contributed suggestions and cross-cutting proposals to make compatible the value of the deposit with the recovery of the square as a public space.

The recovery of San Esteban, the largest archaeological site in Europe with these characteristics, is the cornerstone of the action plan 'Medieval Murcia', which will restore the medieval identity of the city and discover how lived and felt a Murcia of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

'Medieval Murcia' also includes the enhancement of the wall of Santa Eulalia, the fortifications of Monteagudo and the remodeling of the Alfonso X promenade as a tourist and tourist itinerary that will remember the figure of King Wise, Jaime I and King Lobo, among others patrimonial resources.

Maximum social consensus

Currently, the period of public exposure is still open so that associations, professionals and neighborhood groups can contribute their suggestions to the progress of the Master Plan.

In addition, the San Esteban TPU is already immersed in conducting surveys at the foot of the street in order to know the opinion of the Murcia on this project in order that the final document is made with the greatest possible social consensus.

Once all these suggestions are collected and their feasibility is studied technically, it will materialize in an Initial Proposal that, according to the forecasts, will be ready by the end of this year and that will lead to the writing of the Definitive Document for the recovery of this environment .

All these works will be carefully studied by the Committee of Experts as an advisory body of the City Council and assistance of the drafting team of the master plan.

In this way, the committee, of an eminently technical nature in archaeological matters, will supervise and promote the definition of solutions to be undertaken in relation to the valorization of the deposit.

According to the planned timetable, the next meeting will be held before the end of the year and the next in early spring 2018 to prepare the final opinion for incorporation into the Master Plan.

The Committee of Experts is formed by María Martínez Martínez (Professor of Medieval History of the University of Murcia);

Rafael González Fernández (Professor of Ancient History at the University of Murcia);

Angel Luis Molina Molina (Professor Emeritus of Medieval History, Member of the Royal Academy of Alfonso X El Sabio);
