Manos Unidas seeks the solidarity of Murcia through rock to fight hunger in the Senegalese town of Tilene. The beneficiaries of this solidarity action will be 1,222 students, 242 of the secondary school Prosper Dodds and 980 of the neighboring school (02/10/2017)

The next day 7 October at 17:30 hours Manos Unidas will perform, for the first time, a concentration of electric guitars and a later rock concert with solidarity.

A project that, under the motto 'Rock Vs Hambre', will devote its collection to the renovation of a school in a very depressed area of Senegal.

A new activity that was presented this morning by Rebeca Pérez, councilor for youth and development cooperation, accompanied by Marta Martínez, representative of the Association of the Catholic Church in Spain.

It is directed mainly to the young people who are looking for to mobilize for an end in solidarity through music.

That's why they should come with their guitar and amplifier and play together the songs 'There is little R' N 'Roll' from Platero y Tú, and 'Hard as a Rock' from AC / DC.

All this in the Garden of Silk, where then two bands will act.

The cost of the participation amounts to 10 euros with early entry (in Discs Comix) and 12 € at the box office.

This is intended to help young people in the neighborhood of Tilène, who belong to families of different social strata, mostly workers, also officials, merchants and teachers.

Many families are unemployed.

The beneficiaries are 1,222 students, 242 from Prosper Dodds High School and 980 from the neighboring Elisabeth Bidaut Elementary School.

Where funds will be allocated

The project, which amounts to 34,038 euros, is located in the Tilène neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Ziguinchor (Casamance) in southwest Senegal.

The zone of Ziguinchor is where it registers greater pluviometría within the country.

The youth of this neighborhood belong to families of different social strata, officials, merchants and teachers, although a large majority are workers and many families are unemployed and obtain small resources from the informal sector.

In Tilène live more than 500 families, composed of an average of between 5 to 10 people.

In this neighborhood there is a Catholic Primary school with more than 1,000 students, and with a success rate in the official examination of elementary 100% this year, in which Manos Unidas collaborated.

Also in 2010 Manos Unidas returned to collaborate in the construction of the secondary school Prosper Dodds to welcome these students and other children of the neighborhood.

The quality of the public education to which they were exposed is of very low quality, as much for the massification of the classrooms, as for the continuous strikes of teachers.

Eight classrooms were built on one floor in a first phase, with plans to continue the expansion works on a second floor as demand for students increased.

The school depends on the Diocesan Office of Catholic Education and currently has 242 students in 6 classes, where the first cycle of secondary education is completed.

The school has not made the planned expansion because the demand for students has not grown at the expected rate, and because they have difficulty paying teachers.

When the first phase of the works was finished, a good water tightness was not ensured, and torrential rains are causing serious deterioration in the building.

In addition, the lack of a correct system of canalization and drainage in the school is threatening the stability of the foundations, because the water accumulates in the edge of the walls, causing at the same time difficulties in the access to the school of neighboring Primaria.

Faced with this double situation, the parents' association and the Catholic Teaching Authority decided to prepare a project and asked Manos Unidas for its support in order to build a roof and solve the sealing problem of the secondary school building and to install a correct drainage system order to protect buildings and facilitate access to primary school.

The gable roof will be built in height making possible a future extension of the school.

The local contribution will consist of the painting and arrangement of the floors of the building, in total 10% of the project as well as the elaboration and monitoring of the project.

The number of direct beneficiaries of the project are the 242 students of the secondary school and the 980 students of the primary school where the access will be arranged, in total 1,222.
