The Council for Cooperation and Solidarity approves a grant to assist victims of avalanches in Freetown (18/09/2017)

The Councilor for Youth and Development Cooperation, Rebeca Pérez, chaired this morning the Council for Cooperation and Solidarity in which it has been agreed to grant a grant for 15,000 euros by signing an agreement with the Juan Ciudad Foundation.

This aid will enable the implementation of the humanitarian aid project for the care of the victims of the avalanches that occurred in August 2017 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The aim of the project is to care for survivors of avalanches in Freetown in August, where 400 victims were identified, including 109 children, about 600 missing, and more than 25,000 people affected.

The project will be carried out by the Brothers of St. John of God, who have a clinic near the capital, Saint John of God Clinic in Lungi, and a general hospital, St. John of Good Hospital in Lunsar.

Thus, it will focus mainly on directly serving 430 people and will also indirectly benefit 1,000 people, and for this purpose will distribute among the population affected and relocated in shelters, basic necessities (blankets, mattresses, food, etc.) , will also acquire medical equipment for the control of water-borne diseases to the Lungi clinic and carry out awareness-raising activities to prevent epidemics due to water-related diseases.

On the other hand, in this session, the rules for the call for development cooperation and awareness-raising projects for 2017 have been approved, with the sum of 339,000 euros being allocated to the former and 50,000 euros for the latter.

Development cooperation projects may be carried out in any of the countries listed by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development or the Development Assistance Committee, and the priority sectors will be the following:

- Educational.

- Sanitary.

- Human rights.

- Participation and social promotion.

- Productive.

- Infrastructure.

- Environment.

- Governability.

- Empowerment of women.

- Gender equality.

- Food safety.

- Development Education (EPD) and temporary reception of children from developing countries.

Soon these norms will be submitted for approval by the Municipal Board of Governors and published in the page www.murcia.es, also will be called to an informative session to the different Non-Governmental Organizations for the Development with the purpose to make them known.
