Works by Picasso, Gris, Magritte, Delvaux, Chillida and TÃ pies are exhibited for the first time in Murcia thanks to the Telefónica Foundation and the collaboration of the City of Murcia.
These are 120 iconic works of art from the twentieth century (from cubism and surrealism, through informalism or abstraction) that can be seen from this afternoon in El Almudí.
The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Director of Institutional Relations of the Fundación Telefónica, Joan Cruz, and the head of Exhibitions and Collections of the Telefónica Foundation, Laura Fernández Orgaz, presented the exhibition 'Destacados', which opens this late in the Almudí Palace and brings for the first time to Murcia works of Picasso, Gris, Magritte, Delvaux, Chillida and TÃ pies, among other great names of the art of the XX century.
The exhibition Highlights.
Telefónica Collection comprises a selection of 120 iconic art works from the twentieth century between painting, sculpture and paper work.
They have never been exposed collectively (except in Valladolid) and Murcia thus becomes the second city of Spain in which the sample will go, with the collaboration of the City of Murcia.
The exhibition can be visited at the Almudí Palace from 15 September to 12 November.
The pieces chosen for this exhibition allow us to draw a brief overview of some of the most interesting chapters in the history of art from inside and outside our borders throughout the 20th century.
From cubism and surrealism, through informalism, abstraction or the different tendencies of figurative painting.
Echoes of the Vanguards, the Sign and the Form and Towards Other Ways
The exhibition is divided into three distinct areas: Echoes of the Vanguards, the Sign and the Form and Towards other ways.
The first area represents, through a selection of works acquired in the last decades, some of the most important movements of the avant-garde of the early twentieth century: from the cubism of Juan Gris and Louis Marcoussis, the modern personality of Luis Fernández, , the surrealism of René Magritte and Paul Delvaux, to the overflowing creativity of Pablo Picasso with three works of different techniques and stages.
In the Sign and the Form, the visitor will immerse himself in a monographic way in the work of three greats of the most international Spanish art: TÃ pies, Chillida and Saura.
After World War II, art goes through a state of malaise and informalism develops, a complex and diverse style that will spread throughout Europe and the United States, and in which matter, gesture, absence of form or the abstract will generate numerous and interesting variants.
The works that are exhibited in the field Towards other ways saw the light from the creation of an important magazine of thought, technology and society - telos magazine - that still today publishes Fundación Telefónica.
Since 1984, and for more than fifteen years, the publication contained a central booklet reproducing the original series made by the invited artists.
More than forty artists of different generations, more or less consecrated and with totally different styles and languages, went through the pages of telos magazine, creating an interesting background of more than 400 drawings.
It is exhibited by Eduardo Arroyo, Gordillo, Soledad Sevilla and Guillermo Pérez Villalta, among other outstanding artists.
Second Canvas: four works, to the millimeter
The exhibition will be accompanied by the Second Canvas Collection Telefónica, a new way to digitally know the artistic collections of the collection.
With this application, works can be viewed at a resolution 20 times higher than that achieved with a professional camera.
The app also allows you to discover the stories behind each work through its details and share them on social networks, bringing these key pieces of the collection to the world.
It will be available for free download for iPad, iPhone and Android devices and will have four works available: La Belle Société de Magritte, Assemblage amb graffiti de TÃ pies, Chillida's XIII dream Anvil and L'appel de Delvaux.
In addition, this application can be tested in the same exhibition room through ipads located in front of each of these pieces.
A digital tool that allows us to approach the artistic heritage of Telefónica in another way.
The Telefónica Collection: an example of corporate collecting
The Telefónica Collection consists of a set of more than 1,000 works including painting, sculpture, photography and paper work.
The creation of this fund began in the 80s with the intention of promoting the recognition of a series of Spanish artists underrepresented in the state museums.
Exceptional works of Juan Gris, TÃ pies, Chillida, Picasso and Luis Fernández were acquired and over the next two decades, and with objectives very different from the initial, the Collection is expanding and opening to other artistic paths.
As a result of this evolution, the Telefónica Collection has been classified as a collection of collections, being able to be grouped in several thematic blocks and to contain artists who are magnificently well represented both in quantity and in the quality of their works.
With the national and international presence of more and less consecrated authors, the content of the collection is eclectic and diverse in terms of disciplines and aesthetic currents.
Never had an encyclopedic vocation, however, observed as a whole allows to witness some of the most significant movements of the twentieth century: from cubism (represented with a valuable set of more than 40 pieces), surrealism through informalism, abstraction or the different tendencies of figurative painting.
Without forgetting the contemporary photography background, another chapter of great interest, which brings together some of the most relevant authors of this discipline.
