The doctoral thesis held at the University of Murcia (UMU) by Raúl Céspedes Ventura and directed by Professor Javier Ballesta has studied the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Primary Education centers of the Region.
This work of investigation affirms that in these centers there is a good endowment of computers of desktop, interactive whiteboards and projectors.
But he adds that these teams do not help transform education into student-centered teaching styles, but rather support traditional, teacher-centered and textbook-dependent teaching.
For the author of the doctoral thesis, the incorporation of the equipment facilitates many processes and motivates in a great way to the students, but adds that if it is wanted to modernize the education it is necessary to go a step further and to go towards the acquisition of portable equipment and of Students and their families.
It is also concluded that teachers and principals are not an obstacle to the integration of ICT, since they have a positive opinion and attitude regarding the use of ICTs.
They emphasize, on the other hand, the motivating role of technology, as well as its great potential as a source of information, but there is no consensus when it states that they improve student performance or develop higher order skills, such as resolution Of problems, analysis, understanding, critical attitude, etc.
They also point to the rigidity of the curriculum, the lack of flexibility in the schedules, the large amount of content and the excessive workload of teachers, which makes it very difficult to introduce innovations in the classroom settings of each course, thus increasing the Dependence on the use of the textbook, which does fit into this system, being the main reason for maintaining the traditional education system during the last thirty years.
