The Councilor for Youth and Development Cooperation, Rebeca Pérez, today held a meeting with representatives and workers of the Red Cross Murcia to analyze the state of the project to improve conditions for access to drinking water, basic sanitation and hygiene of children In 4 schools and 40 households in the communes of Tibiri and Guidan Roumdji (Maradi Region) in Niger.
A work with which special attention is given to 885 children between the ages of 6 and 13, since it is a group susceptible to greater vulnerability.
The beneficiaries of the program are 3,500 people.
The campaign has a grant of more than 63,000 euros contributed by the Cooperation funds of the council that runs Rebeca Perez, which is half the cost of this project.
The Republic of Niger is located in West Africa and its territory is characterized by adverse climatic conditions, progressive desertification and intense demographic pressure.
It ranks last in the Human Development Index, 187, according to the UNDP Human Development Report (2014).
The country is among the poorest and least developed in the world.
The overall objective is to contribute to the prevention and control of water-borne diseases (mainly diarrheic) of the child population in the municipalities of Tibiri and Guidan Roumdji (Maradi Region), while improving access to water Potable water, basic sanitation and hygiene.
To achieve the specific objective and overall objective, the construction of water infrastructures (excavated wells and 2 connections to the local network) and the construction of basic sanitation infrastructures (two blocks of two latrines and sinks of each of the Schools) and the rehabilitation of four very deteriorated classrooms.
This is achieved by improving the knowledge in hygiene and sanitation of the students and teachers of the four schools, as well as improving the hygiene and sanitation conditions of the localities where these centers are located, and the promotion of good Practices through the identification of 40 families in situations of vulnerability.
