Four percent of the region's agricultural land is in a state of neglect, which represents more than 24,000 hectares, as reflected in the doctoral thesis held at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Murcia (UMU) by Carlos Martínez Hernández.
The regions most affected, according to the conclusions reached by this research, are in Fortuna, Abanilla, Jumilla and Yecla.
As far as crops are concerned, the most abandoned are those of the vine and carob tree, in addition to the labor lands.
The doctoral thesis says that "there are abandoned areas at almost any altitude, slope and orientation".
As for the causes, the thesis points out that this abandonment is due to the scarce rural population, to overexploited soils and to the existence of an agriculture that moves towards high mechanization and qualification, among others.
The most frequent specific socioeconomic causes are related to the idea of an excessive increase in production costs, speculation by land sale or leasing, small size of plots, retirement without professional descent and depopulation of rural areas.
This scientific work was directed by the professors of the aforementioned UMU faculty Cayetano Espejo, José María Serrano and María Asunción Romero.
