The Government Board approved this morning the draft Ordinance on Protection and Tenure of Animals of Human Coexistence, a document fruit of the work of an intersectoral commission in which all the political groups with municipal representation, animal protection associations, Of Veterinarians of the Region of Murcia, Counseling of Agriculture of the CARM, Faculty of Veterinary of the University of Murcia and municipal technicians, among others.
The objective is to guarantee the welfare and protection of animals, avoiding situations of cruelty and mistreatment, absence of help, omission or neglect of attention.
For this reason, the City of Murcia is committed to the 'zero slaughter' of animals under its custody that will be fully implemented by 2020. Also, one of the priorities is to promote the adoption of all animals that Enter the Municipal Control Center of Zoonoses and the dogs and cats given in adoption will be given properly dewormed, vaccinated, identified and sterilized.
This ordinance establishes the limitation of the tenure of animals according to the type of dwelling of the owner with a maximum of three dogs or cats in urban houses and five in rural areas.
It also includes several prohibitions, such as permanently keeping pets on balconies or terraces, practicing mutilations for aesthetic purposes, the use of animals in shows, fights, popular parties and other activities that imply cruelty or mistreatment.
This new Ordinance arises after the legislative changes produced as a result of the amendment of the Criminal Code and the legislation in this area of ​​the Autonomous Communities, and aims to establish the regulation to regulate the tenure of animals that coexist in the human environment within the municipality .
