The councilor of Cambiemos Murcia, Margarita Guerrero, has filed a motion to the Plenary this Thursday in which requests the incorporation of ethical clauses of fair trade in municipal contracts, concessions and authorizations.
Thus, Guerrero wants the City Council, along the lines of others such as those in Madrid and León, to evaluate fair trade as a tool for sustainable development and fight against climate change that applies criteria based on transparency, accountability, traceability, Fair trade practices, gender equity or equal opportunity for producers and producers.
"We want the local government to be an example in the fight against social fractures," said the mayor, who, through this initiative, has asked the municipal government to carry out actions to obtain accreditation of Murcia as "City For fair trade ".
Equally, the motion calls for actions aimed at facilitating access to fair trade by citizens, as well as promoting responsible consumption habits with the holding of workshops and exhibitions, among others.
Fair Trade, which is part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, seeks to contribute to a more sustainable development by offering better conditions to local producers, with the establishment of minimum prices and guarantees of respect for Human Rights and Labor conditions.
The institutions "have an obligation to promote it", as in the case of the European Parliament, which in its Resolution on Fair Trade and Development 2005/2245 defined it as "an important instrument for poverty reduction and sustainable development, ensuring a Stable and sustainable access to the European market and increasing consumer awareness. "
In the case of Murcia, the NGO Coordinator of the Region developed, along with other entities such as Murcia Acoge, InteRed Murcia or Oxfam Intermón, a fair to promote this type of trade on the occasion of the International Fair Trade Day, held in the past may 13th.
