The new project, called MedAID (Integrated Development of Mediterranean Aquaculture), will set the key factors to boost aquaculture production in the Mediterranean, focusing on goldfish and sea bass, two of the most consumed species in Europe.
This research will bring together the industry's top experts from more than thirty organizations, including universities, producers and research centers in twelve European countries.
Funded by the European Union's H2020 program, and with a budget of more than seven million, it is coordinated by the Agronomic Mediterranean Institute of Zaragoza and the Institut of Research and Technology Agroalimentaries of Catalonia.
Together with them, the University of Murcia will provide an experience of more than 25 years in the sector and, especially, the study of the immune system of these sea bream and sea bass.
This team will be led by Professor Mª Ángeles Esteban and will participate in a special way Professor Alberto Cuesta in the area of animal husbandry.
During the process, the competitiveness and sustainability of the marine aquaculture sector will be thoroughly studied.
Nutrition and feeding practices, animal welfare, animal diseases, genetics, environmental impact, consumer perception and marketing aspects, economic efficiency and performance of the sector, as well as the social image of aquaculture will be discussed.
This project is born in the context of a continent that needs to level the amount of fish it consumes compared to the one it produces, in the face of a deficit that is being supplied with imported products.
For this reason, the European Commission intends to increase sustainable aquaculture production by 20%.
Boosting a sector that employs about 85,000 people, especially in rural and coastal areas.
MedAID aims to play a key role in increasing the hitherto stagnant productivity of Mediterranean aquaculture.
