It is affirmed by the patriarch of Antioch and all the East of the Syrians, Ignace Youssif III Younan who participates in the lectures scheduled at the International Congress of Mariology of the UCAM.
Youssif regrets that Christian communities do not interest anyone "because they are few and lack economic power."
Youssif is the bishop of the city of Antioch, in present-day Turkey, one of the oldest dioceses in the world, a place where the Christian community is persecuted.
"The situation of Christians in the Middle East is unsustainable. No one is interested in protecting Christians in the Middle East because they are few and lack economic power because they do not have oil," says Youssif.
In Syria there are many religious communities, at present 8% of the population are Christians born there.
In his speech, the Patriarch of Antioch regretted the interests of the present world, for the selfishness that governs life.
"The civilian world has associations that fight to defend a type of animal that is in danger of extinction or a rare plant, nevertheless does not worry about the persecution suffered by Christians who have been living in their land for thousands of years," he says. Youssif, who also says that pastors do their utmost to give voice to the persecuted people, "above all we seek that the East knows the problem, and that it intervenes to find a solution."
The patriarch of Antioch considers it a most difficult situation.
"Eastern Christians have suffered persecution not only now, in times of intolerance they had to flee to the mountains or the countryside and return to the city when the persecution passed"
The message of the Virgin is still alive today
This morning the bishop emeritus of Fatima, Serafim de Soussa, also participated in the congress, who recalled that the message that the Virgin transmitted to the shepherds 100 years ago is still in force.
"The Virgin is the sacrament of peace, it is love, justice, friendship and tolerance," says Soussa.
On Friday, the third and last day of the congress, the Prefect of the Congregation of Catholic Education, Cardinal Guiseppe Versaldi, will speak;
The deputy Jorge Fernández Díaz and the president of the Spanish Society of Mariology, Juan Miguel Ferrer Grenesche.
