Build city through social networks (04/04/2017)

Murcia participates in a European initiative that explores how the participation and the contents generated by the citizens can contribute to improve the urban management.

José Guillén explains the intervention of Murcia as a member of a network of partners from different European countries that promotes "more and more citizen participation, with transparency as a flag".

A city is better constructed when not only the City Council informs the Murcia of what it does, but when the citizens give their opinion about what has been done, is being done and, above all, what will be the next steps planned to transform The city in a better place.

URBACT is working on this challenge, a cohesion policy instrument co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, which helps cities to develop new and sustainable solutions that integrate urban economic, social and environmental issues.

It is an innovative project that explores how social networks and user-generated content can contribute to improving the urban management of cities, regardless of their size.

The agenda of the 2nd Neighborhood Participation Day organized today has begun with the intervention of the Councilor for Modernization, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén, on Interactive Cities, ie how can use the use of social networks by entities Local to connect with the citizen.

The philosophy behind the URBACT project is - explains Guillén - "to communicate urban development in an understandable way for a wide public, balancing the participation of the citizens in the decision making process and explaining the decision making by the administration" .

A fundamental axis of the project, coupled with the bidirectional nature of communication with Murcia, is that it is a tool to improve the quality of public services in terms of efficiency and transparency.

Transform the city, safeguarding what makes Murcia, Murcia

So, according to Guillén, "it promotes better urban governance, more and more citizen participation, with transparency as a flag."

The participation of Murcia in URBACT focuses especially on the part of "Urban Development and Citizen Participation", since it improves the understanding of the use of social networks applied to society and the way that citizens have to perceive the communication that comes to them through Part of the Town Hall.

From the perspective of a Smart City, the project "involves all Murcia and contributes directly to the transformation of the city as we know it today, safeguarding all aspects of Murcia, Murcia," said José Guillén.

Together with Murcia, other nine European capitals are participating in the project: Genoa (Italy, leader), Alba Iulia (Romania), Lisbon (Portugal), Debrecen (Hungary), Ghent (Belgium), Palermo , Tartu (Estonia) and Varna (Bulgaria).

Meeting of the Local Action Group

Within the framework of the Second Neighborhood Participation Conference, a meeting of the Local Action Group is also planned, which will advise on the work carried out in connection with this project.

The team is made up of experts in social networks, bloggers, digital journalists, etc., as well as members of the Social Council who were part of the working groups on modernization of administration and smartcities.
