Antonio Navarro presents the Bicycle Action Plan 2017-2019, with new sections in vials located inside and outside the urban center and connections with pedanias, which provide continuity to existing bike lanes.
The proposal foresees an investment of 3.7 million euros to create a cycle network of 20,400 linear meters, of which almost 8,5 km are located in the streets of the historic center.
Among the first Phase 1 projects to be commissioned this year is the closing of a first ring that will connect Juan Carlos I to the river, passing through the Plaza Circular and Díez de Revenga
An investment of 3.7 million euros and a term of three years are the financial resources and the execution time provided by the City to create a cycle network of 20,400 linear meters in the city and 13,000 meters more connection with districts.
The project will allow safe, useful and accessible travel, allowing the bicycle to take center stage in urban mobility.
This is contemplated in the Plan of Action of the Bicycle 2017-2019 that has been presented to the members of the Municipal Observatory and this morning explained the Councilor for Environment, Urbanism and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and which brings the necessary road infrastructure to Very heart of the city.
This plan is the concretion and definition of the project of the four major North-South and East-West axes presented a few months ago and with it is given a "decisive step in the present and future municipal management, since it contemplates concrete and programmed actions, Prioritizing the two key elements for the definitive and real implementation of the bicycle: the infrastructure network and the necessary financing, "said Navarro.
The technical approach is to provide continuity to existing bike lanes in the municipality and totaling 134 kilometers.
The objective now is to transform an interconnected mesh that gives fluidity to cycling journeys, joining the old stretches with the new ones, to "articulate an authentic vertebrate network of cycling paths that allow to circulate through the city and give connection to the districts," he added. The councilman.
"Normalizing and facilitating the use of bicycles as a normal means of transportation for journeys to workplaces, universities, schools, libraries or leisure areas is the main reason for this plan," said Navarro, who also recalled that "We need to give the bicycle a privileged place in the life of cities if we want to combat the effects of climate change, which has among its main causes the density of urban traffic."
"Therefore," said the owner of the Environment, "our model of city should give more space to pedestrian and bicycle trips, thus giving priority to sustainable mobility as a means of daily transportation."
The first results of this plan will begin to be appreciated before the end of the year, bearing in mind that this exercise has 100% of the funding needed to commission the drafting of all the projects envisaged.
The configuration of this cycle network runs through the center of the city, bordering and roads and roads connecting with districts and is structured in three areas: urban center, historic center and connections to pedanias.
Surroundings urban center
They will be unidirectional and bidirectional segregated bike lanes that will be added to the existing ones.
The sections of new construction will add 12 kilometers distributed in 37 streets, among them, from Juan Carlos I Avenue to Ronda Levante, May Day, Fame, Ronda Sur or Avenida de Los Dolores, among many others.
Old Town surroundings
Given the characteristics and typology of streets, it is anticipated to save the problem of the narrowness of the roads of this environment, making pedestrian traffic compatible with the light, without architectural barriers.
Once the rider leaves this environment, both the pacified zones (Zone 30) and the main bike lanes in the urban center can be incorporated.
Considering that the execution of streets with compatible pedestrian qualification is considered feasible, the estimated cycle length is 8,436 linear meters distributed in 27 streets: Mariano Girada, Sagasta, Jara Carrillo, San Nicolás, Riquelme, Alfonso X, Cetina, Salzillo, Plaza Fontes, Mariano Padilla and San Juan de Dios, among others.
Connections to districts
At present there are already some bike lanes that connect the town with pedanias, as is the case of those running along the North and South Coastal, Variante de Sangonera or the speck of the Segura River.
The proposal is to connect them and, in addition, to unite the city with the districts that are not, vertebrando a global network in the municipality.
To do this, two basic arcs are established:
· North arch: Avda. Kingdom of Murcia, Miguel de Induráin and Los Dolores, with a length of 14 km (currently running).
· Arco Sur: Via Verde Los Dolores-Torreagüera, with a length of 8 km (old train track) and Alquibla acequia, with almost 5 km (Carril Alquibla and Carril Gonzalez).
