The recovery of St. Stephen opens to the city (17/03/2017)

Work begins for the social recovery of this environment of 23,000 square meters, which constitutes a cultural and tourist resource of international level.

The Murcians will be able to observe on the street and in a direct way the works of conservation of the archaeological remains of the deposit of the centuries XII and XIII, declared Good of Cultural Interest.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Minister of Culture and Portavocía, Noelia Arroyo, members of the Municipal Corporation, representatives of Professional Associations, University of Murcia, hoteliers and neighbors of the neighborhood attended today the beginning of the construction of the San Esteban and his surroundings, an action that is put in place to return to Murcia this central public space of 23,000 square meters, thus enabling a cultural and tourist resource of international level for the city and the Region of Murcia.

José Ballesta said that "we want to open San Esteban to the city and that is why today we have put in place the initial actions in the environment, which include both the recovery of the environment with a circular pedestrian walkway with its own lighting, archaeological remains".

"We will return this space to the residents of Murcia and make it a unique and differentiating element of this new model of city in which we are working from participation and technical excellence," said the mayor, who added that "coordination of the City Council and the Community is total and we go hand in hand at every step of this ambitious draft legislature. "

San Esteban, open for works

The works that start today and in which a dozen workers work, contemplate two axes of action: on the one hand, the adaptation of the environment (with a term of execution of two months) and, on the other, the conservation of the remains by Of a team of specialists including archaeologists and restorers (work will last four months).

Both actions are running simultaneously.

The adequacy of the perimeter area includes the construction of a pedestrian walkway in the streets of Jerónimo de Roda and Portillo de San Antonio and the adaptation of the existing sidewalk in the Callejón Burruezo, with a new system of LED lighting with low consumption.

Likewise, a lookout point with informative elements that will allow to know the evolution of the works, between the streets Acisclo Diaz and Portillo de San Antonio.

The improvements made in the perimeter area will allow neighbors to observe on the street and in a direct way the works of conservation of the archaeological remains, since they have begun to replace the panels with images of the city by means of railings that allow to contemplate the Site of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, declared to be of Cultural Interest.

Care and cleaning of the site includes the maintenance and in situ conservation of the structure of the plot of the Arrixaca suburb and the renewal of the geotextile (the fabric that protects the remains from the external elements).

These are indispensable actions prior to the musealization and use of this environment, according to the specifications defined by the Master Plan.

The Master Plan is progressing well

In this way, the execution of the integral recovery project of San Esteban, which includes the archaeological zone, the Palace and the Jesuit church of the sixteenth century, will be articulated according to the guidelines of the Master Plan.

Following its recent award last February, the Master Plan will have a multidisciplinary content, prioritize the musealization of the site and address actions of social and neighborhood integration, tourism promotion, cultural, trade, leisure, furniture and urban enjoyment, areas of possible pedestrianization , Environmental recovery and regeneration, cleaning and waste collection.

The mayor informed that "currently, the multidisciplinary team is in the phase of data collection, so we can know a progress of the project next May."

The drafting of the Master Plan has a term of execution of nine months.

After the first two months, the team in charge will present an advance of the project and, after another four months, will announce an initial proposal and the consultations made to the different neighborhood groups and experts, before the final document is prepared.

"This is one of the most innovative and avant-garde projects that has known the history of this city and has three fundamental characteristics: it is comprehensive, has a Master Plan and ensures social and neighborhood integration, through consensus and participation "Said the mayor during his speech.

Archaeologists, engineers, academics and tourism experts

The company awarded the Master Plan has a multidisciplinary team composed of architects, engineers, archaeologists, restaurateurs, economists and tourism experts who will take charge of topographic and archaeological data, conduct an inventory and cataloging of the remains and draw up proposals for its use.

The Director Plan will include, in addition to the recommendations made by academics, specialists and professional associations, the proposals of neighborhood associations, social groups linked to the site and merchants of Murcia.

Independent observers

In addition, the work will be advised by an Expert Committee and the three independent observers of the Hispania Nostra Association, the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (of the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage and of Archives and Libraries of the Secretariat Of State of Culture of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport);

And the Santa María la Real Foundation for Historic Heritage.
