This mark quantifies the set of greenhouse gas emissions generated by the daily activities of the City Council for a year, including those generated by the fuel consumption of its fleet of vehicles, the heating of public buildings and facilities and the escape of Refrigerant gases in air conditioning equipment, in addition to indirect emissions caused by the consumption of electric energy in buildings and municipal facilities.
Antonio Navarro announces that the goal set for 2020 is to reduce emissions by 8%, equivalent to 2% per year, which is 2,243 tCO2 eq.
The public services provided by the City of Murcia to citizens caused in 2015 a release to the atmosphere 28,038 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
This figure, which is deduced from the calculations made by the Department of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta, through the Agency for Energy and Climate Change (ALEM), represents a total of 0.0637 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per inhabitant .
Once obtained this index, the City Council has carried out the registration process in the National Registry of Carbon Footprint managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which quantifies the CO2 emissions derived from the services provided by the local Administration To the citizens through the consumption of electricity and fossil fuels of all the dependencies that are municipal property or over which it exercises control through its management.
Determining the carbon footprint allows quantifying the impact of an activity on the basis of the CO2 emissions it causes, that is, the mark left on the environment with each activity that emits greenhouse gases.
Councilman Antonio Navarro explained that both registration and calculation are voluntary, but Murcia has wanted to join in the framework of the actions that the City is doing in the fight against climate change.
Once the footprint is calculated, the objective is to incorporate the city into the 40 municipalities of all Spain that already appear in the National Registry of Carbon Footprint.
The results obtained for the City of Murcia (0.064 t CO2eq per inhabitant) are lower than the ratio of other cities registered in this census, with the exception of Alicante.
In any case, this value is merely indicative, since the carbon footprints are not comparable to each other and should be understood as an index on which to implement an emission reduction plan.
