"At the beginning of the project, drawing is the only thing that matters to me" (10/03/2017)

The Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, one of the jewels of the baroque architecture of the Region of Murcia, became the appropriate setting to welcome Álvaro Siza, one of the most important architects of the last decades.

'Casa para un artista' was the name of the conference that the Portuguese teacher offered to more than 600 people in the framework of the III International Congress of Art, Architecture and Heritage - Space and Landscape 'Tribute to Siza' organized by the International Chair of The Arts 'Cristóbal Gabarrón' and the Degree in Architecture of the Catholic University of Murcia.

Winner of the Pitzker Prize in 1992 (considered the most prestigious international award that can be won by an architect), Siza made a tour of one of the works he is currently doing: Gabarrón Center for Artistic Creation.

It is a house for the muleño sculptor Cristóbal Gabarrón, conceived as a place in which artists and thinkers will meet.

In the words of Gabarrón himself, "it will be a laboratory of ideas".

In his explanation of how he conceived the work, Siza emphasized the importance of translating the idea with the pencil: "At the beginning of the project, drawing is the only thing that matters to me, the first thing is to draw, it is fundamental, because it sets the ideas. the photograph".

For the Portuguese architect, it has been fundamental the freedom of the one that has enjoyed throughout the creation process because it has allowed him to conceive the idea from all points of view: "One of the things that I like most about this project is that I can work In the interior and the exterior. When opening a window you see for it but it is also the light that enters the interior. It is a whole.

With this, he also began a reflection on the drift in the last years of works that are done by parts and that end up being a mixture of several ideas: "Now there is a dangerous tendency to fragment the architecture. And then the structure is made with engineers and finally the interior with decorators because it is considered that the architect does not know how to make the interiors. If there is no communication between them, the initial idea of the architect is not reflected. The architect must have a dialogue with The owner to understand the interior that he must realize. All must converge in the same project but there must be a governance, an authorship. "

In addition, from his experience he offered a small tip for the students present in the temple that has worked for him to be always working actively: "It is important for me to work on several projects because that prevents an obsession that can block me. Thinking about one job can be for another job where you're unemployed and that's why I try to do several things at once. "

The other part in this project, which will be located on the estate of Los Llanos (between Pliego and Mula), is Cristóbal Gabarrón.

The sculptor from Murcia is very excited about this work: "He is a cult architect and he is a friend. He understands very well my idea of how I conceive of space with its own architecture."

He also recalled that in that residence "which will not be a house to use" will invite "scientists, writers, musicians, architects and artists to have, within the framework of this impressive landscape, a series of exchanges of ideas of which I believe Very interesting things will emerge. "

In addition, he highlighted the presence of the UCAM in this project since the GEODA group, made up of students and professors of the Degree in Architecture of the Catholic University of Murcia, has been present since the beginning of the idea: "See how you study, dialogue , How the tastings are made on the ground, how the construction is decided and how the problems are solved. It is not something that can be done with a great architect like Siza.

Luis Chillida, in memory of his father

'Intervenciones artísticos y paisaje' was the name of the conference of Luis Chillida, son of the universal sculptor Eduardo Chillida, in which he toured the most important aspects of his work.

Among the moments of his career recalled when he was pressed to make many reproductions of the same sculpture to reach more public and could be exposed in more places: "The moment you saw the works reproduced from the original that had created no He decided that he would never do reproductions in life, he just wanted to do unique works. "

Faced with the situation that was exposed to him that he would not be known for not reaching many people, he gave the answer: "Let the work be one and belong to many. First artists who focused their work on public works ".

One of Chillida's best-known works, which was not understood at the time, was the birth of "El peine del viento" ("The Wind Combo"). "When it was completed in 1977 the mayor did not want to open it. There were many critics and today it is the most visited work of San Sebastián and the city is no longer understood without it, which is the fruit of a total knowledge of the terrain. My father knew every crease of the rock.
