Murcian researchers discover how a compound extracted from the olive tree could aid in wound healing (07/03/2017)

Scientists from the Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB) - Arrixaca have for the first time described the mechanism by which plant extracts are able to promote and improve the closure of chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot or pressure ulcers.

The results of this research, which have been collaborated by professors of the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Murcia (UMU) and published in the journal Plos One, could be key to develop new drugs and strategies to improve the healing of Cutaneous wounds in general and chronic wounds in particular.

The dean of the Faculty of Nursing and member of the research team, David Armero, explains that the paper describes how "oleanolic acid, a compound obtained from olive leaf, is capable of activating important molecular pathways for the migration of the cells of the Edge of a wound and accelerate its closure. "

The team, coordinated by Francisco J. Nicolás, is composed of researchers María Ruzafa, Antonio Jesus Ramos and David Armero, UMU, and Angel Bernabé and Sergio Liarte, IMIB-Clinical University Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca.
