The Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia (UMU) today welcomed the awards ceremony to the winners of the eleventh Regional Olympiad of this discipline.

Antonio García Martínez, from the La Merced-Fuensanta Marist School (Murcia), has won first place, followed by Lejing Chen, IES Francisco Salzillo (Alcantarilla), and Gloria Sofía García Linares, also from the first school.

In addition, during the ceremony, framed in the activities of the XXX Biology Week of the UMU, three other students have received accèsits: Diego Corbalán Campillo (Colegio Monteagudo, Murcia), Sara E. Martinez Lorente (IES Francisco Salzillo) and Cristina Sanmartín Sánchez (Marist La Merced-Fuensanta).

The three winners will represent the Region of Murcia at the next National Biology Olympiad, which will take place in Pamplona from 23 to 26 March.

In this edition, 164 students from the 2nd year of Bachillerato, belonging to 44 Secondary Education Centers of the Region of Murcia, participated in the tests to questions of ecology, molecular biology, microbiology, zoology, botany and physiology.

This regional phase has been organized by the Faculty of Biology of the UMU, the Official College of Biologists of the Region (COBRM), the Ministry of Education and the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (ETSIA).

In addition, during the closing ceremony of the Biology Week, presided over by the rector of the UMU, José Orihuela, and the dean of the Faculty, Alfonsa García, a lecture was developed by Professor Francisco García Carmona.

Likewise, awards were awarded for the competitions of Posters, Photography and School Drawing, as well as the prizes for the best academic record and best TFM of the Master's Degree in Bioinformatics.

Finally, a tribute was paid to the administration and services staff of the center that has retired this year and an oil portrait of the UMU's first rector, José Loustau, has been installed in the faculty room. That has realized the painter Murcia Blas Rosique.
