A doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia (UMU) by Jesús Martí Esquitino has warned about the probability that people who were mentally affected by the earthquakes that struck Lorca in May 2011 may develop some type of psychopathology in the future.
This research, carried out in the Faculty of Psychology and that has obtained the qualification of outstanding cum laude, also points out that the people most vulnerable to stressful situations such as those of seismic movements are those that previously suffered adverse experiences in childhood, Such as abuses, death of relatives and others.
To carry out the doctoral thesis, the author analyzed a sample composed of 47 people who had developed a mental disorder of the anxious-depressive spectrum after the earthquakes of Lorca, compared with other 141 who had also lived but did not develop any psychopathology .
The study advises to handle these results with caution, in the absence of other investigations, but anticipates that they do allow to plan specific preventive strategies for subpopulations with risk factors and promotion of protective factors.
The doctoral thesis was directed by UMU professors Fernando Navarro Mateu and Julio Sánchez Mecca.
