The University of Murcia (UMU) today has invested doctor honoris causa to the professor of Nursing of the University of the Balearic Islands Rosamaría Alberdi Castell, becoming the first nurse to receive this academic distinction in Spain.
Alberdi thanked the doctorate "in the name of many nurses, of all those without whom, by no means, could be here today, raising the hand to celebrate that the nursing profession in Espala has fulfilled a very important objective", as it is to be "Recognized with the highest honor conferred by the university."
The new honorary doctor of the UMU spoke of her experiences in the Francoist university "convulsa, students of protest and without freedom" - and how in 1977 the nurses got the nursing studies to be integrated into the Spanish university.
This integration was not an easy meeting, he explained, but in any case this occurred and "has been and is enormously fruitful for all: society, university and nurses," added the teacher.
In addition, he said the meeting created awareness;
On the one hand, the academic institution "has become aware that nurses carry out all kinds of responsibilities" and, on the other hand, nurses "are aware that the university is the right place for the development of a discipline that requires A level of deep reflection and the constant critical and innovative revision of its contents ".
Professor Pilar Almansa, who has acted as a godmother, has highlighted in the laudatio that Alberdi's professional trajectory has been closely linked to the main events that have marked the history of nursing in Spain in recent years.
Almansa also highlighted the contributions that the doctor honoris causa has made in the field of nursing care, which has commented that she is considered as the author who "knows best and has taught us what and how we are nurses."
The event was closed by UMU's rector, José Orihuela, who emphasized the "humanistic relevance" of the nursing profession and the way in which Professor Rosamaría Alberdi has been practicing it, which she has defined "as a paradigm Of social and academic struggle. "
"The award, said the rector, humbly tries to recognize the work of a pioneering nurse in promoting the university level for Nursing studies, which have given a development to the profession unprecedented in Spain.
Likewise, Orihuela thanked the general director of Universities, Juan Monzó, present at the ceremony, the signing this morning of a protocol for the integration in the UMU as faculty of the School of Nursing of Cartagena.
