The commitment of the City Council to achieve the eradication of gender violence, and until then, comprehensive care for women and children who suffer in the municipality is a permanent job.
However, on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, is an opportunity taken every year by the Council of Social Rights to commemorate this day, carry out actions of awareness and training.
The institutional event, held this morning in the Plenary Hall, with the assistance of the Mayor, José Ballesta, Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, and representatives of all municipal groups, has become a necessary event to remind the Citizens that "to end violence against women, in all its forms, is a responsibility of all institutions, of all administrations but also of all people."
To this end, the City Council works from different axes, among them, intensifying the measures of awareness raising and awareness, putting a special attention to involve the youth and the associations, and, of course, with the support to the victims.
In this sense, the Department of Social Rights develops a specific program to advance the elimination of situations of inequality and social disadvantage of women and to promote and increase their presence in different areas of social life.
Among these measures, it is worth mentioning the call for tenders and awards:
- II edition of the Video Contest on Gender Violence in the Relations of the Couple of the Youth Population, whose objective is to show to the society the different perceptions that the young people have on the violence against the women, with the aim of increasing the sensitization And awareness, while encouraging healthy relationships with partners and eradicating unhealthy relationships, domination and violence.
Winners: Dinamur, Center for Youth Initiatives of the Region of Murcia, with the video "Mi dulce princesa".
The prize consists of diploma and economic recognition of 500 euros.
- II Edition of the Contests, directed to the educational centers with the purpose of incorporating the gender perspective and promote the values ​​of equality, non-discrimination and prevention of gender violence.
Endowed with diploma and prize of 1,000 euros:
- Educating for Equality: Winner, the School Juan Carlos I, Llano de Brujas.
Special mentions to CEIP Barriomar 75 and CEIP Santa María de la Paz.
- Building Equality, Prevention of Gender Violence: Winner, IES Marqués de los Vélez, from El Palmar.
- Murcia awards in Equality: symbol through which the City of Murcia recognizes people and entities who stand out for their work in the field of prevention, care and assistance to women in situations of gender violence:
- Association "Widows Salzillo", created in 1967, collaborate in a disinterested and altruistic way, through the wardrobe Salzillo, making baskets of newborns for women attended by the EMAVI.
- Juan López Fernández, recognizing his work as a taxi driver, providing transportation services to women assisted by the EMAVI for more than 15 years, with a warm welcome, discretion and good disposition 24 hours a day.
Fewer women attended
The Municipal Team for Attention to Violence against Women (EMAVI) has registered 238 cases in the ten months to 2016 (173 Spanish and 65 foreign), 17 fewer than in the same period of the previous year, and has attended a total of 2,095 interventions (consultations, telephone calls, etc.).
As for the ages of the women who required the participation of the team, the majority were in the age groups between 30 and 40 years (31.5%) and between 40 and 50 years (29.8%).
Of these cases, 160 (67%) reported denouncing gender violence.
The perpetrator of 138 women was the ex-wife, with whom in most of the situations did not live together (192) and in 75% the victim had children under their care.
One of the resources provided by the City Council for the cases that require it are two shelters - which this year have housed 6 women and 13 children -, who are currently occupied by 2 women and 3 minors.

Its priority work is to provide comprehensive care to women victims to guide and support them in the process of overcoming this situation, in addition to preventing violence.
