Murcia hosts an information campaign, organized by RACE and Liberty Seguros, with the support of the DGT and the collaboration of the City Council, to raise awareness of the problems of urban mobility to the elders of the municipality.
This is intended to reduce the risk of traffic accidents for the entire senior population with special emphasis on commuting as pedestrians and the various difficulties they face when crossing the street and moving within the city.
Avenida de la Libertad welcomes, from today until November 18, this campaign in which different aspects of road education, health, new social values ​​and recommendations are explained through panels
A mobile classroom has also been installed in which attendees can watch a video with mobility problems in the senior population, know their limitations, the consequences of bad practices, accident data and good practices.
This classroom features a Third Age Simulator Costume, developed by the Institute for Safety Research at Liberty Mutual, the entity's parent in Boston, which simulates the movement restriction generated by diseases such as arthritis, as well as causes The curvature of the back and difficult the vision of who puts it.
In this way those who test it are able to empathize and understand the mobility of senior people and become aware of the possible impediments that these find when moving around the city.
In addition they are offered the possibility of answering a survey on different aspects of the municipality in order to be able to carry out actions that improve senior mobility.
In the exterior, a car has been installed so that attendees can learn the correct positioning of child restraint systems, ergonomics and safety in driving and the placement and hazards of cargo, as well as explaining the different safety elements of the vehicle .
All participants in the campaign will be given different material such as a reflective bag, a brochure on health and road safety and recommendations for urban mobility.
The campaign reaches the municipality after having passed through 11 other Spanish cities: Granada, Santiago, Salamanca, Badajoz, Toledo, Oviedo, Alicante, Santander, Zaragoza, Alcorcón and Logroño.
This initiative has been carried out this year, as well as in Murcia, Seville, Alcorcón, Logroño and Bilbao.
In Murcia there have been 3,723 accidents this year, of which 439 were involved over 65 years.
69 of these accidents were abuses, 10 falls of two-wheeled vehicles and the rest collisions with passenger cars.
