The City Council, in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Murcia, adds value to the Camposanto as cultural heritage of the municipality of Murcia, which should be studied and protection.

The first brochures with cultural information about the history of the cemetery and the main murcianas personalities that lie in it, highlight the historical, ethnographic and anthropological value of this necropolis dating from 1885

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the councilors of Development, Roque Ortiz, Traffic, Security and Civil Protection, Lola Sanchez, and Health and Sports, Felipe Coello, presented this morning at the Cemetery of Our Father Jesus the first brochures cultural information about the history of the Camposanto and the main murcianas personalities that lie therein, an initiative to promote this area as a cultural city.

This is an initiative that the City, through the Department of Sports and Health, developed in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Murcia and aims to incorporate 'the city of the dead' a 'city of living ', integrating the Cemetery of Jesus as cultural heritage of the municipality of Murcia, for their aesthetic, historic, ethnographic and anthropological value, which should be studied and protection.

This cemetery, one of the 34 that exist in the municipality, is the largest and the only municipally owned.

It has over 130 years of history, since its origin dates back to 1885, when he was fitted as a public health measure to address the scourge of plague that ravaged Murcia.

Our Father Jesus, located in the hamlet of El Puntal (although popularly known as the 'Graveyard of Espinardo'), currently home to 160,000 people interred.

"This is a true collective monument to generations of Murcia, which brings together so many people who have worked to build the Murcia we know today, among which are big names of culture and the arts," said the mayor.

The brochures published, one with general information about the history of the cemetery and the other explaining the evolution of the city of Murcia through the biography of these historical figures are the basis which will offer tourist and cultural visits in a respectful manner and organized, as is done in other parts of Europe, placing value on this space and contributing to their preservation.

Funerary architecture: analysis of mausoleums and graveyards

The City Council is already working in collaboration with students of Anthropology at the University of Murcia in a third and fourth brochure on the socio-economic elites and funerary architecture of Camposanto, which will reveal the evolution of the various monuments as mausoleums and graveyards, and analyze their romantic, modernist, style etc.

Following the publication of brochures, the next step will be the signing of an agreement with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Murcia, to establish a collaborative framework, which also involved the Tourist Office of the City of Murcia.
