The Catholic University of Murcia has become once again at the heart of the Spanish Olympic spirit with the celebration of the 'VII Technical Conference COE VI National Congress of Olympism UCAM: Heroes in Rio' which has brought together seven of the medalists at the last Games Olympians who were accompanied by their coaches, doctors and physical therapists to explain college students experience in Rio 16 and all the difficulties that have been found to achieve Olympic medal.
Alejandro Blanco, president of the COE, stressed the importance of this day that allows to know "people who are under the athletes."
He added that "such a level as these athletes do not have any country in the world, and that is what is making the UCAM, helping athletes to form".
For his part, José Luis Mendoza, president of the Catholic University of Murcia, has said that the institution he represents has been second in the world in medals at the last Games in Rio. "This is important, because Stanford, which has been the first, has a tradition of many years, and we are a young university, this course have accomplished 20 years, "he said, and pointed out that the athlete Juanma Molina was the first athlete to that awarded scholarships institution to combine studies and high level competition.
"We are pleased to collaborate with athletes, they can be help for their training, a unique work we do together with the COE," he added.
The future of Mireia
In the first round table they have intervened: Mireia Belmonte (swimming gold and bronze);
Saul Craviotto (canoeing gold and bronze);
Cristian Toro (canoeing gold);
Cooper Marcus Walz (canoeing gold).
They also accompanied them Gonzalo Gomez De Salazar, Mireia Belmonte physiotherapist;
Luis Brazier, coach Cooper Marcus Walz;
and Miguel Garcia, coach Saúl Craviotto and Cristian Toro.
Prior to his speech, Mireia Belmonte has listed what their current projects, including the World Short Course Championships in Canada, which takes place in December;
and one in Budapest, "which it is the main objective of the season."
During his speech, he narrated his "unforgettable experience" in the last Games in Rio, and how this can help you to face future challenges.
One of the latest additions to the UCAM athletes has been Marcus Cooper, who has been happy to be part of the UCAM, "a university for sports scores, the largest in the world."
Combine studies and sport
In the second table they have participated: Teresa Perales (Paralympic swimming one gold and three silvers);
Joel González (taekwondo bronze);
and Carlos Coloma (mountain biking bronze).
This table also participated three technicians: Gabriel Esparza, coach Joel Gonzalez;
Francisco Esparza, doctor of Carlos Coloma;
and Angel Santamaria, coach Teresa Perales.
Before his speech, Teresa Perales has held a meeting with the media, which has said its intention to continue competing at a high level.
"If the body is respecting me, why not go on. I still biting much still the bug and want to go to Tokyo," he assured.
The swimmer has talked about his Olympic experience "and which means have a support as well," he said in relation to the UCAM.
"I always say that although we practice individual sports are the person who is at our side we have a very large team, and all are important in the results."
Of the Catholic University of Murcia has underlined its support, not only economically, "but also a vital support, accompanying on the way, to deal with a party that until now had unprotected as he was training. I myself have lived difficulty of combining studies with the practice of high competition, and this is facilitated all this, "he stressed.
International Congress Sport and Christianity
Similarly, in the Assembly Hall, has started its activity the International Congress 'Body and Spirit: Sport and Christianity in History' featuring experts from universities throughout Spain and around the world: France, Italy, United States, Canada, Poland, United Kingdom and Chile.
In the first round tables and presentations it has been discussed on sport in the ancient world and the Congress will resume with the table 'Medieval History, Modern and America' tomorrow.
