More state funding for urban public transport through a specific law, in line with the recommendations of the European Union (EU), is the target of one of the motions that will defend the councilman's change Nacho Tornel in plenary tomorrow the City of Murcia.
The initiative, which contains the same agreements that by now Madrid and the PSOE in the city of the capital, which has been adopted today at its plenary session, remember that public transport is a "key element" of the operation of the municipalities lacking the necessary support from the central government.
Tornel explained that Spain is the only European country that does not have a state law financing public transport, and that the only reference on this subject is contained in the Law on Local Government, which only determines the municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must provide a service of public transport.
This situation is summed in the words of Tornel, cuts in the State contribution to the provision of public transport systems in recent years.
In fact, in the case of Murcia the reduction was 28 percent, a figure that does not match the increasing demand of travelers.
For the mayor, the State contribution is not only "inadequate" but also does not fit the demographic developments related criteria.
This means that the investment is not distributed evenly based on the size of the municipalities and, therefore, is "asymmetric".
The request's change is not to obtain a higher subsidy, has held Tornel, but further funding to sustain and improve public transport to make it as efficient and competitive as possible, to ensure social access to mobility, greater sustainability and a cities with the highest quality of life.
