The City Council takes a step towards creating an urban network of bike paths that connect the North-South and East-West axes (10/03/2016)

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today chaired the presentation of the draft of Network Carriles Bike Murcia to members of the Municipal Observatory of the Bicycle (OMB), a plan that proposes the creation of an urban mesh of bike lanes interconnected in North-South and East-West axis of the city, which will consolidate the bicycle as a means of safe and accessible in the main transport arteries of Murcia.

"This is a first draft of this ambitious project that proposes the creation of a cycling network of a total of 20 fully segregated and interconnected kilometers, which will give continuity to the existing bike lanes by building new sections, so that a mesh around the North-South and east-West city axis articulated, "said the mayor, who said that" we are agreeing the project through this participatory and open process in which we have the opinions, contributions and proposals from different social groups and associations in the municipality, "said the mayor.

In this regard, he stressed that "this project of transformation of the city intended to adapt Murcia mobility bike, something that every day is more common, so that no longer exist excuses for not pedaling, connecting the sections that already exist and creating new spaces reserved for cyclists, promoting coexistence with pedestrians and drivers on the major routes of communication of the city. "

The planned network will link together the various existing cycling trails, allowing travel by bicycle over 200 continuous kilometers, providing greater security to users in the town.

The realization of this project will make available to cyclists an exclusive platform for them, both physically separated lanes for motor vehicles and pedestrian sidewalks, generating greater respect and coexistence between different users of the public highway.

Axes North-South and East-West

From the Municipal Office of the Bicycle they have been proposed various technical solutions that are tailored to the characteristics of each section of track, with a clear perspective: to make more sustainable Murcia, open and respectful of the environment town;

promoting alternative transportation system and nonpolluting.

Thus, this plan includes the creation of the North-South axis through the creation of five new sections: 1) Mariano Rojas-Plaza de Castilla, 2) Circular-Train Station, 3) Avenue of Fame and Pio Baroja, 4) Avda . Mayday and South Ronda and 5) Miguel Indurain.

The East-West axis includes three new sections: 1) Mariano Rojas-Ronda de Levante, 2) Malecon and urban stretch of the river and 3) South Ronda.

The creation of bike lanes in the urban section of the bank of the River Segura allow continued enable a bike path over 27 kilometers that will link with the Contraparada Beniel.

Following the presentation of the first draft and subsequent analysis, members of the Infrastructure Committee of the Municipal Observatory of the Bicycle (OMB) will meet on April 19, International Day of the Bicycle, in a session in which each association, organization professional and collective municipality will make their contributions to the plan.

The proposal, which has an initial budget of one million euros for this year, work will continue over the coming months to reach a consensual agreement.
