A doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia has brought to autologous bone grafting as the most suitable for filling large bone defects that by their size and location, the bone can not repair spontaneously.
According to the author, José Luis Clavel Rojo, the use of autologous bone graft is better than allografts and bone substitutes, since it provides the three properties required for bone regeneration (osteoconduction, osteoinduction and osteogenesis) and provides structural integrity important in the reconstruction of large defects.
The research, which was led by professors from the University of Murcia, Ramón Luis Meseguer, Manuel Clavel-Sainz, and Vicente Vicente Ortega, does not obviate the problems with this solution, as their recovery is limited in quantity and morbidity reaches 20% of cases (pain, infection, hematoma, abdominal hernias, and others).
This thesis won the excellent cum laude, as it presented the Brazilian Geni Sabino Anastacio, Faculty of Communication and Information and has discussed the importance of extending the universities a policy of intellectual property protection.
The definition of this policy, in the opinion of the author, is an essential requirement for universities to invest in patentable technology research that can be transferred to the productive sector.
This research, led by Professor María Dolores Ayuso, has been done in the field of Brazilian universities of Goias and Brasilia.
