[Neighborhood participation, the creation of green areas and the need for new infrastructures are the focus of the new edition of the Neighborhood Forum (23/01/2021)

The speakers analyzed the problems in the area, as well as some of the most relevant issues for the improvement of services, such as education, health, tourism, expropriation and the role played by neighborhood associations. All the participants agreed on the need to create green spaces, new educational, cultural and social infrastructures that promote the relationship between neighbors, communication with the city center, sustainable mobility plans and greater involvement of groups.

The expert highlighted the socioeconomic impulse of the South Connection project and its importance for the creation of jobs and the promotion of the economy in the neighborhoods.

He also focused his presentation on the benefits for health, for which the creation of green spaces and recreational areas is necessary. For his part, Luis Mesa del Castillo, director of the Mesa del Castillo Hospital, highlighted the importance of neighborhood relations and the feeling of belonging to the neighborhood.

He also spoke about Health and the resources that are necessary to position this area in the South zone. Another participant was David Ruiz González, president of the Ronda Sur Neighborhood Association.

The speaker highlighted the importance of neighborhood participation for decision-making and insisted that a greater presence of these groups is necessary during the development of this process. For his part, he described the project as a unique opportunity to turn Murcia into a modern, sustainable city that is balanced with the rest of the city.

His proposal focused on the prioritization of green spaces, pedestrianization and sustainable mobility, with more bike lanes and a tram line linking the southern districts with the city center.

He also insisted on the elimination of traffic lanes and the promotion of essential public services, such as more educational and sports infrastructure. Susana López Fuentes showed the neighborhood sentiment in relation to the temporary expropriation due to the burying of the roads as it passed through Barriomar.

Finally Alberto Torrecillas, manager of the Pacoche Hotels and Pacoche Restaurant, focused his presentation on the fact that South Connection would be an opportunity for growth for the municipality, but above all for the districts and neighborhoods closest to the train tracks.

The businessman stressed that this initiative would benefit the city's tourism, but for this it is also necessary to take into account other sectors such as culture, which attracts large-scale events, exhibitions and fairs. The event, moderated by the journalist Encarna Talavera, was followed by fifty spectators through the City Council's YouTube channel, who also left their comments and reflections through the social network.

In general, citizens shared ideas such as pedestrianization, green areas, the importance of participation and an improvement of infrastructure in all neighborhoods and districts.  "The diverse opinions enrich the public debate, so with these forums what we intend is to continue adding and contributing ideas in what will be the municipality's largest project," said Mercedes Bernabé, who added that "in addition to the interventions of the speakers, the comments and reflections of the forum's followers will also be collected and analyzed through the City Council's YouTube channel ”.
