Esther Nevado censures that the responsibility is left in other administrations or in the funds of the entities, "to which we do not pay until the end of the year, sometimes, into the following year, thus leaving all municipal jurisdiction in hands of solidarity and the good work of social organizations " The Municipal Socialist Group regrets that the Department of Social Rights has not sent to the opposition groups in the City Council the draft of the first local strategy of the municipality of Murcia for homeless people, which has been presented today to the social entities.
However, "the document has reached us and as a first conclusion, the lack of places offered by the municipality is evident", as confirmed by the Socialist councilor Esther Nevado in the last plenary session.
After several years of waiting for this draft, during which the number of homeless people in the municipality has not stopped growing while the resources allocated to their attention have stagnated, this strategy arrives where it is spoken of the existence of 464 places of care for homeless people, of which 110 are financed by the City Council, which represents a scarce 23%, "or in other words, it does not finance even one in four places, when the competence and the obligation lies with the municipal government team ".
The rest of the places are financed by other administrations and by the associations and foundations themselves.
In addition, it is also observed that a total of 1,216,789 euros is spent on care for homeless people, which represents a cost per place of 30 euros, "something far from 45-55 euros per person and place in normal conditions, reaching 134 in the special device launched in Madrid during the crisis caused by Covid-19 ".
In addition, Nevado specifies that, once again, "I have to denounce that the Department of Social Rights, led by Pilar Torres, is not at the height of the circumstances, neither before the pandemic nor during it.
It has provided more financial resources, which are fewer for the entire group it serves, an extremely sensitive group that is the one that is experiencing the worst, nor more personnel.
" Thus, criticizes that there is no economic quantification of the measures proposed in the draft and asks "how much money is going to be consigned in the 2021 Budgets, if there are going to be budgets?".
It also points out that the national average is 4.3 places for every 10,000 inhabitants, when in Murcia we find 2.4 public places for every 10,000 inhabitants.
For this reason, it also censures that responsibility is left in other administrations or in the entities' own funds, "and what is worse, we do it through subsidies that we do not pay until the end of the year, to times entered the following year and leaving all municipal competence in the hands of solidarity and the good work of social organizations ".
"From the Socialilsta Group, we have asked for an expansion of places and we will continue to do so although we have been branded opportunists, mean, because the truth is that in Murcia about 600 people spend the night in the open every day, according to the Councilor itself ", he adds.
In this sense, "we cannot allow such perverse situations as it is that there are people who live and die on the street.
Something inadmissible and unworthy that violates human rights", declares the councilor, who assures that "the street kills, it is something proven with the death a few weeks ago of a man at the door of an organization that is currently saturated by the lack of places.
This should make the councilor rethink her policies, leave the photos behind which there is nothing and dedicate himself to convincing the rest of his Government colleagues to obtain more funds for his council, which have been frozen for years.
You cannot do more with the same " .
