[The prestigious 'GreenMetric' ranking places the UMU among the 200 most sustainable universities in the world (15/12/2020)

| The University of Murcia stands out for the management of waste, as well as the reuse and efficient use of water, where he is ranked 60th and 67th on the ladder | The University of Murcia (UMU) occupies position 176 in the classification of sustainable universities 'IU GreenMetric' 2020 out of a total of 912 universities; Classification in which the higher institutions around the world that have voluntarily submitted to the examination have been evaluated, provided evidence and documentation to accredit the degree of compliance with the required 'green' indicators.

This ranking, edited by the University of Jakarta, measures six fundamental aspects of environmental sustainability in the university environment: infrastructure, energy and climate change, the generation and treatment of waste and waste, water management, transportation and education.

Depending on the degree of compliance with certain indicators related to these areas, 'GreenMetric' grants a specific score.

In this sense, the UMU stands out in the management of waste, as well as the reuse and efficient use of water, where it is ranked 60th and 67th, respectively. All these actions have been coordinated by Unit T technique of the University of Murcia for a better use of resources.

Regarding waste management, the UMU has obtained 1,650 points out of a total of 1,800.

This positive evaluation is due to the waste collection and recycling work carried out on all campuses through the provision of separate containers for the different types of waste.

High scores are also obtained in relation to the large number of environmental awareness actions and promotion of sustainable development carried out by the Sustainable Campus initiative, especially those aimed at reducing generation of plastics among the university community.

Efficient water management In the water resources management section, the UMU obtains a score of 900 out of a total of 1,000 thanks to the total reuse of water that is carried out within the Espinardo Campus through its symbiotic treatment plant.

Annually, this facility treats about 160,000 cubic meters of drinking water, which is reused and used to irrigate around 34 hectares of green areas.

The project has a clear landscape and environmental vocation, since it is committed to a non-chemical purification technique and promotes the maintenance of a sustainable green space.

Another aspect where the UMU obtains a 'notable' score is in education about sustainability thanks in part to the ODSesiones project, which makes the university community and Murcian society aware of the 2030 Agenda.

From February 2019 to November 2021, it has organized nearly 400 activities to date, in which about 20,000 people have participated, mostly university students.

The University of Murcia has obtained a total of 1500 points out of a total of 1800 points in this section of sustainability education.

ODSesiones received last November the award for the best initiative of public administrations in the category of Sustainable Development Goals by the leading online communication medium in Spanish-speaking CSR 'Corresponsables', and in 2019 he was awarded by the Union of Associated Work Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia (Ucomur) with the 'Rainbow' prize for representing the values ??of cooperativism.

In the area of ??awareness, the University of Murcia has obtained the highest score; 300 points out of 300.

This very positive assessment is due especially to the campaigns carried out by the Sustainable Campus project, which has as one of its objectives to involve the university community in all its actions and, especially, to have the participation of the students and with their opinion when carrying out specific projects.

Suspense on 'smart and sustainable buildings' One of the aspects on which 'GreenMetric' has given a lower rating in the infrastructure category to the UMU is due to the lack of 'smart buildings' on its campuses in the Region, as well as the age of many of the university buildings, in which the latest measures and recommendations to make their operation more sustainable have not yet been implemented.

Smart buildings promote energy saving and efficiency through the use of the Internet of things, with the mission of improving the security, usability and accessibility of the building, as well as reducing costs and improving its sustainability.

In this sense,UMU is working from the Office of the Vice President for Infrastructure Planning to update its network of buildings on its five campuses in the municipalities of Murcia, San Javier and Lorca.

The UMU is presented for the first time to 'GreenMetric', and the vice-rector for Infrastructure Planning, Mª Bel n L pez, highlighted that "this good result in the ranking encourages us to continue promoting the commitment to sustainability in all of our campuses.

" In his opinion, this ranking "also helps us to order each of the improvement areas on which we are working, unify efforts and establish the main lines of work to be a more sustainable and more sustainable university.

be efficient.

" At the national level, the UMU obtains the ninth position.

The ranking is led in Spain by the universities of Alcal , Complutense and Rey Juan Carlos, while worldwide the first place is held by the University of the Netherlands Wageningen, followed by Oxford and Nottinghan (United Kingdom).
