[The PSOE proposes vision reviews for minors so that the lack of economic means is not a reason for future visual disabilities (10/12/2020)

| Socialist councilor Antonio Benito warns that early detection is crucial for intellectual and academic of the schoolchildren and requests a collaboration agreement with the College of Opticians-Optometrists and the University of Murcia | The Municipal Socialist Group raises a motion for the next plenary session of the Murcia City Council in order to design a program of visual reviews for minors with financial aid, since "most of the information that our brain receives it through the visual system and the development of the sense of vision takes place during childhood and adolescence through a process that requires stimulation and learning, which is why failures can cause both lasting problems , like lazy eye amblyopia, and academic learning ", explains councilor Antonio Benito.

Therefore, it is necessary to carefully monitor the correct development of the minor's visual system and that the necessary aids and corrections are applied.

"Both the public health network and the network of private health centers do a great job in detecting and treating visual health problems in the child and adolescent population, but even so it is necessary that from the public powers deepen in the care of the visual development of our minors in order that they have a correct physiological development and an optimal academic performance ", justifies the councilor.

Likewise, he explains that "we are living in a stage in which the increased incidence of high or very high myopia is an important risk factor for a drastic increase in the future of various retinal pathologies that cause disability and even permanent blindness.

" Likewise, Benito points out that "we cannot allow the lack of economic means to cause poor children's vision to cause visual impairment for the rest of the lives of our sons and daughters" and recognizes that "the demand for social services , which was already important before the crisis, has worsened with the health and economic crisis derived from COVID-19, so it is quite likely that the number of cases of minors who need visual aid and are not they can afford it will be accentuated soon, which will surely cause a higher incidence of juvenile myopia.

" For all these reasons, it proposes to have the collaboration of both private entities such as the College of Opticians-Optometrists of the Region of Murcia, which, through its members, has a wide network of centers that also They have shown their support and interest in collaborating altruistically.

In addition, it can be extended to other centers such as the assistance services of the Murcian Health Service, the University of Murcia, private clinics or even medical consultations, in order to create a visual aid network to the youth of the municipality in the worst socioeconomic situation.

Likewise, the councilor considers it necessary to launch an ambitious program of visual checks for schoolchildren and the promotion of healthy visual habits in schools in the municipality of Murcia, in collaboration with the Murcian Health Service, the Ministry of Education, the College of Opticians-Optometrists and the University of Murcia, as well as signing an agreement to include both the provision of optical aids (lenses or glasses), as well as compliance with vision therapy programs such as prevention of the accelerated increase in myopia.
