| The Department of Sustainable Development and the agrarian association sign a new agreement, endowed with 50,000 euros, to reduce the waiting list for the use of these machines, at the service of small Murcian farmers | The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Sustainable Development and Huerta, led by the mayor Antonio Navarro, and Asaja have expanded the agreement they had signed so that the machines that crush agricultural pruning reach more farms in the orchard and avoid burning. The initiative was presented this morning by the mayor Navarro and the secretary general of Asaja, Alfonso Gálvez.
The extension of the agreement, approved at the last meeting of the Local Government Board, has an economic endowment of 50,000 euros and will remain in force until June 30, 2021.One of the main objectives of the agreement is to reduce the waiting list for the use of portable crushing machines, which are at the service of small Murcian farmers.
In the next year the shredders will perform almost 400 services and will treat tons of pruning remains, which will be reused, thus avoiding the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere.Councilor Antonio Navarro explained that "this measure is part of the environmental project that the City Council has followed in recent years and that seeks to reduce the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere and preserve our garden environment."Running since 2019In September 2019, the Murcian Consistory made the first crushing machine available to Murcian farmers.
Later, it acquired the second, which has a small size, so it can easily access small agricultural plots, places inaccessible for the first crusher, which is larger.By virtue of the agreement presented today, the City Council and Asaja will articulate a strategy to attend in an orderly manner to all the existing demand of users of the crushing machines, as well as to make this service known among all the farmers of the Murcian garden.Coordination with the Local Police and Municipal BoardsA protocol for coordinating data collection work will be established to organize waiting lists, telephone assistance and the organization of work routes.
The planned actions will be coordinated by both the Local Police and the Municipal Boards, which will carry out a very important task of maintaining and updating the database of existing farmers in the different areas.Likewise, the campaign that will be launched will include the dissemination and dissemination of information through newsletters, diptychs, the Asaja website and the profiles that this association has on social networks.
Through these channels, the activities that are going to be carried out will be announced and the techniques and use of organic farming, the municipal Land Bank system and the techniques for crushing agricultural remains from pruning will be promoted for their subsequent reuse.Online dissemination sessionThe campaign will also promote the celebration of an online day to disseminate the use that is made of the pruning remains treated by the machines purchased by the City Council and to review the Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change of the Municipality of Murcia. This agreement will seek to improve air quality in those urban environments close to areas where agricultural burns are common, contribute to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change by reducing CO2 emissions, improving the resilience of the soil and its biodiversity, through new agricultural practices; provide farmers with an alternative management system to burning and promote circular economy practices in the municipality.Agreements like the one presented today are part of the Clean Air Strategy, which includes numerous measures to reduce pollution and curb climate change, such as pedestrianization of urban environments, the commitment to clean means in public transport and cleaning services road, the promotion of green areas and the commitment to recycling and circular economy systems that facilitate the reuse of waste. Not in vain the environmental benefits of pruning, instead of burning stubble, are the following:Reduction of atmospheric pollution, reducing the contribution of CO2 to the atmosphere.Reduction of the greenhouse effect.Improved soil fertility.Increased water retention capacity in the soil.Increase in soil organic matter.Increased landscape conservation.Decrease in erosion and desertification.
