| The best valued proposals of the Climathon 2020 are an APP to promote environmental care, improving the management of green areas with information via satellite and turn the orchard into the great backbone garden of the municipality | The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, today presented the three winning proposals of the Climathon 2020, the largest event in global climate change that is held simultaneously in the main cities around the world, and in which the city of Murcia participates for the fifth consecutive year.Specifically, the best valued proposals were the following: a PPP to promote the environmental care of green areas, improving the management of green areas using satellite information and converting the orchard into a backbone garden of the municipality.
"Three proposals that are going to be taken into account in the next municipal initiatives for Green Infrastructure and Climate Change," said the mayor.“Thanks to the Climathon, new steps have been taken towards a municipality with an interconnected network of urban green spaces with the landscapes of the orchard and the mountain.
Technological, business and creative innovation at the service of a more sustainable Murcia with a better quality of life ”, indicated José Ballesta.This edition of CLIMATHON 2020 has focused on proposing solutions to improve connectivity between urban green areas with peri-urban areas and natural spaces, such as the Segura River, the surroundings of La Huerta or Places of Community Interest (SCI).The presentation took place at the Murcia City Council, with the assistance of the awarded teams who have presented the content of their project to municipal officials.
Subsequently, the diplomas were officially awarded to the winners.Three winning ideasFirst prize: MAPA - Web APP to promote citizen collaboration and awareness through games and challenges.
Support social commitment to turn care for the environment into real actions, such as making contaminated environments visible or communicating and educating respect and sensitivity towards nature.Second prize: Green Remote– Maintenance of green areas and infrastructures using satellite information.
Optimize the management of urban, peri-urban areas and natural spaces and create an updated database of urban, peri-urban green areas and natural spaces in the municipality.Second prize: The vegetable garden as the backbone of Murcia - Create a garden from the vegetable garden to communicate the parts of the city in a transversal way, completing urban and peri-urban connectivity, through a blue green infrastructure. One hundred participantsThe Murcia Climathon, promoted by the City Council through the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change, took place on 12 and 13 November 2020, this time in telematic format due to the health situation we are suffering, derived from COVID19 .Climathon 2020 has been a challenge to find solutions that allow green areas to effectively provide ecosystem services, which are basically defined as the benefits that nature brings to society, such as, for example: water retention, biodiversity reservoir, recreation areas, decrease in temperatures, among other parameters.In Climathon 2020, a hundred people from different professional fields participated, such as entrepreneurs, representatives of companies, professional associations, associations, students and 11 experts in the subject that was the object of study, that is, Green Infrastructures and the fight against Climate Change .Murcia was one of the nine Spanish cities that participated in this year's Climathon along with Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Vitoria, Zamora and Sestao.
